Braves Squeak Out A Win

Braves Squeak Out A Win

Coming off a stellar victory Monday against the NL East leading Braves, the Phillies and Ethan Martin could not pull out another victory Tuesday, as the Phillies lost 3 to 1. Martin did not pitch terrible, he struck out 6 Braves while giving up 3 runs, but the Phillies failed to capitalize on any opportunities to score. They were only 1 for 3 with RISP. The Phillies mustard out 6 hits against a very good Kris Medlen and an always tough Braves bullpen. The Braves got out to a 3-0 lead after Martin made a few mistakes, including giving up a double to Kris Medlen, which scored Tyler Pastornicky, making it 1-0. Then as Martin started to settle down, Chris Johnson hits a 2 run bomb to left making it 3-0 Braves. That is all Medlen and the Braves needed. The Phillies did get on the board in the Top of the 6th when Domonic Brown singled to center, scoring Chase Utley making it 3-1 Braves. The inning could of been bigger, but Brown was thrown out at 2nd after trying to stretch the single into a double. The Phillies just looked flat the whole game and like many games this season, they came up short. After the game Ethan Martin spoke about pitching in his home state of Georgia; “I thought I was going to be more amped up or [have more] butterflies,” Martin said. “It wasn’t that bad. I was kind of surprised” (1). The Phillies look to win the series when they play the rubber match tonight in Atlanta, John Lannan, who is coming off a terrible game against the Washington Nationals, where he gave up 8 runs in 5 innings. The Braves will counter with Brandon Beachy who received a no decision on August 3rd against the Phillies. The game will be featured on Comcast SportsNet at 7:10 at Turner Field.

Domonic Brown Leads Phils To Victory!

Atlanta Braves v Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies are trying every which way to save this so far so-so season and the past two series have helped the Phillies gain a little momentum, after wining two out of three against the NL best Pittsburgh Pirates, the Phillies then took two out of three against the NL East leading Atlanta Braves, after winning 7 to 3 yesterday. The newly crowned NL All-Star Domonic Brown led the way with a 2 run HR and a triple. Jonathan Pettibone got the start and pitched very well to earn his 5th win of the season. The Phillies mustarded out 10 hits against off Braves pitching. The Phillies got out to a 7-1 lead after a series of throwing errors by the Braves. The Braves did score 2 runs of J.C. Ramirez but that was all she wrote for the Braves. After the game Brown spoke about the series win against the Braves,  “It’s very important,” Domonic Brown said of the series victory. “They’re division rivals. Those guys are in first place in our division. [Saturday] night was a tough one, but that shows you the chemistry and veteran leadership we have in this clubhouse, to not get down and keep battling. It was a big win” (1). The Phillies now are 7.5 behind the Braves and are 3.5 behind the Nationals, who the Phillies start a big series against tonight at Citizens Bank Park.  John Lannan will take the mound, who received a no decision on June 20th, when he gave up 2 ER and pitched 5 innings. Dan Haren who also received a no decision in his last start against the Phillies on June 17th. The game is at 7:05pm and will be featured on ESPN and Comcast SportsNet.

Phillies Fans Second Most Loyal In MLB

Phillies fans during Game 1 of the NLCS.

According to Brand Keys a sports loyalty index, yeah I never heard of it either, has named Phillies fans second most loyal behind, sigh, Yankees fans. The site bases the loyalty factor on intensity with which fans support the home team vs. corresponding values for the fans in the other teams in the market.” (1).  The Top five according to Brand Keys are Yankees, Phillies, Giants, Cardinals and Braves. Braves? The Braves have the best record in baseball and they drew 26,400 fans last night at Turner Field. To put that number into perspective, the Phillies Marlins game on Sunday drew 21,412 fans. Yeah sound pretty loyal to me! The bottom five are Mets, Mariners, Pirates, Royals and the Astros. What do you think? Do you agree?

Lee In The Sky With Diamonds

The losing streak is over and it only took Cliff Lee one start to get his first win, unlike last year where Lee got his first win in his 14th start of the year. The Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 2 to 0 behind a dominant Cliff Lee. Lee looked like 2009 Lee, the year we got him from the Cleveland Indians. Lee gave up just 2 hits to a potent Atlanta Braves lineup that roughed up Cole Hamels and Roy Halladay in previous nights. Lee’s stats for the night were:  8 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB 8 K. The Phillies were not exactly killing the baseball last night, but what they did was good enough to get the win. Revere knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice and Chase Utley knocked in a run on a sac fly to right field. This was the first lead of the season for the Phils. Ryan Howard ended his 0 for 14 streak with a base hit that hopefully will get the big piece going. Jonathan Papelbon came into the 9th inning and shut the Braves down in order and earned his first save of the year. The only question I had from last night’s game is why did Lee pitch the eighth? The Phillies in the offseason signed Mike Adams to be the eighth inning guy and gave him a pretty hefty contract for a one inning guy? Manual said after the game “It seemed to me the last three innings he got even better,” Manuel said. “He was clicking. Good tempo. Good rhythm. He was in sync. He used his pitches, man. That’s a typical Cliff Lee game.” (1). Last year Cliff Lee was the 4th worse in the majors in run support, the Phillies averaged 3.20 runs a game. Phillies will have a little winning streak going into today’s home opener against the Kansas City Royals. The game is at 4:05pm. Kyle Kendrick will get the start and will look to get the Phillies a two game winning streak, he will be opposed by Wade Davis who was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in a 7 player deal that also including James Shields. The game will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.

It’s Only One Game Right? Phillies/Halladay Get Rocked In Atlanta

It’s Only One Game Right? Phillies/Halladay Get Rocked In Atlanta

Last night had as much anticipation as a playoff game as Roy Halladay made his 2013 season debut with many counting him out before his season started. Well last night made us scratch our heads and wonder what was going on? The Phillies lost 9 to 2 and of the runs were given up by Halladay but Halladay managed to get 9 strikeouts and have a decent velocity, he averaged about 92 mph on his fastball. Halladay made some mistakes and needed almost 40 pitches to get out of the first inning and pitched out and into jams. What can we do but just watch and hope he will make it. Halladay’s final stats for the game: 3 1/3 innings, 5 ER, 6 H, 3 BB, 9K and 2 long homeruns. After the game Halladay was quoted to say, “I’m going to fix it. I’m going to fix it.” (1). Can we believe him? If it wasn’t for Utley the Phillies would have been shutout. The Phillies had chances to score more runs with two men and no outs but Eric Kratz, who is filling in for Carlos Ruiz, grounded into a double play and Halladay came up and struck out. The Phillies are running into the same offensive woes that has plague them the past few season and they need an uplift to get the ball rolling. Halladay is a star pitcher who’s star has fallen into another galaxy. Hopefully Halladay has enough to make it through the season and pitch like the Halladay we expect to see. Cliff Lee is asked to be the stopper tonight when he takes the mound and tries to avoid the sweep against the Braves. Lee had his struggles through spring training going 0 and 1 with a 4.79 ERA, giving up 25 H and 11 ER. The Braves will counter with Kris Medlen, who moved from the bullpen to the rotation. The Braves do not have the pitching they once had, but the Phillies pitching has been terrible the past two games, and made the Braves pitching look phenomenal. The game is at 7:10pm and will be shown on The Comcast Network.
