Hamels Helps The Phillies Win!

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels works in the first inning of a baseball game against the Atlanta Braves in Atlanta, Monday, Aug. 12, 2013. Photo: John Bazemore

Cole Hamels looked like Cole Hamels of last year, unfortunately it doesn’t matter, as the Phillies are not going anywhere. But despite that fact, Cole Hamels pitched a complete game and helped the Phillies break their road losing streak by beating the Atlanta Braves 5 to 1. The Phillies had previously lost their last 11 games on the road. The Phillies got a mix of great pitching and timely hitting from everyone. Jimmy Rollins started the scoring by hitting a single to center, scoring Hamels who got a triple to start off the inning. Then in the 5th inning Cody Asche, who has been hitting the ball very well since his call up, hit a 3 run home run to make it 4-0 Phils. Hamels was lights out the entire night, striking out 9 and only letting the Braves get 6 hits. This win was Charlie Manuel’s 1,000 managerial win. The Phillies got 8 hits and were 3 for 8 with RISP and that helped the Phillies win the game. After the game Charlie Manuel spoke about his 1,000th win; “It’s definitely quite an achievement,” Manuel said. “Like I told my players, they’re the ones that make it happen. They play. The two organizations I’ve been with, they’re the ones that get the players for me. That just goes to show you just how good they are. It’s hard for me to stand there and say I accept all of my accolades, because the other people are definitely achieving those for you. That’s kind of how I look at it. I’m sure later on it probably means a lot more to me than right now. We’re still trying to win some games and stuff” (1). The Phillies are still 12 games below .500 but maybe they can pick it up and help  gain some momentum going into next year. The Phillies continue their series with  the Braves tonight at Turner Field,  Ethan Martin will take the mound. Martin is coming off a strong start against the Chicago Cubs, where he won his first MLB game since his call up. The Braves will counter with Kris Melden. The game will be featured on Comcast SportsNet at 7:10pm.

Papelblown

Cole Hamels has had a rough year but last night he pitched probably the best game this year and it was blown up by Jonathan Papelblown as I like to start calling him. The Phillies were leading 1-0 in the ninth inning and was trying to win a series and start a new winning streak, but Papelbon did not want the Phillies to win. He gave up 4 hits in a row before he even got an out. It was the 6th blown save by Papelbon this year. The Phillies had a chance in the 9th with the bases loaded with no outs, but they failed to score a run. That was a disgrace, but it should of never gotten to that point in the game. The Phillies scored with the help from Cole Hamels, who hit a base hit to left scoring Laynce Nix in the bottom of the 5th. That would be it for the offense, but the way Hamels was pitching it was all they needed, and when your 13 million dollar closer comes in you expect him to hold it for Hamels, but he saved blew the game. Hey Papelbon, we didn’t sign up for sucking and blowing up the game? After the game Papelbon discussed his poor performance, “Whether I blow a game or whether I save a game, whatever is happening within the organization, I feel like I’m honest and forthcoming and I’m the same way after games like tonight,” Papelbon said. “I accept things. I don’t shy away from things. That’s just the way I approach it and that’s just the way I go to work on a daily basis. I feel like that’s the best way to go about a day’s work is to just be honest with yourself and be honest with the position you’re in and not try to sugarcoat anything or trying to see something for what it’s not. That’s the way I’ve always been. I go by facts and I stand by what I say. I don’t feel like I said anything that wasn’t true” (1). Maybe they should of sign Brad Lidge up for a night and put him in the game he would of saved it. Lidge officially retired last night as a member of the Phillies and threw out the first pitch. The Phillies welcome the NL East leading Atlanta Braves to town, tonight the Phillies will induct Curt Schilling into the wall of fame tonight and the 1993 NL Champions team will be honored Sunday Night. Tonight’s game will be at 7:05pm and Ethan Martin will make his MLB Debut in place of Cliff Lee, who was scratched for a second straight start due to a stiff neck. The Braves will counter with Kris Melden. The game will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.

No Trades & A Terrible Loss

No Trades & A Terrible Loss

Well the trading deadline has come and gone and for the first time in years, the Phillies made no trades. That is probably not the worse news, to top off an uneventful trading deadline, the Phillies lost to the San Francisco Giants 9 to 2. The Phillies looked awful and it didn’t help that Kyle Kendrick did his best Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels , Chad Qualls impersonation giving up 7 Runs, 6 earned over 2 innings. The only two highlights of the night was Cody Asche making his first MLB start at third base dove for a ball, that Michael Young probably would not of gotten, and it stopped from the Giants from scoring more runs. The talks of Chase  Utley getting an extension may have helped him drive in the Phillies only 2 runs and one was his 14th HR of the year.  The Giants out hit the Phillies last night 14 to 5. The Phillies coming off a great win Monday night, looked flat and came out stiff. After the game Kyle Kendrick spoke about his poor performance, “I have to make better pitches, that’s what it comes down to,” said Kendrick, whose ERA rose to 4.29. “They found some holes, and It was a frustrating night for me” (1). The Phillies continue their series with the Giants tonight, and celebrate the career of Brad Lidge who will retire tonight as a Phillie. All fans will receive a free Brad Lidge photo. Cole Hamels get the nod and looks to help the Phillies win their first series since the Chicago White Sox win on July 14th. Matt Cain gets the start for the Giants. The game starts at 7:05pm and the Brad Lidge festivities will start pregame.

Trade Rumors 7/30

The trading deadline is upon us and the Phillies in the last 9 games have become sellers. The news out of Phillies camp is that everyone on the roster is available except for three players: Cole Hamels,  Domonic Brown and Chase Utley. That means that Lee, Papelbon, Rollins are all available. According to mlbtraderumors.com, the Red Sox are kicking the tires on Cliff Lee and the Phillies are asking for the Red Sox to assume control of all of Lee’s contract ($70 million left until 2015 with an option for 2016) and the Phillies want in return, the team’s 1, 2, and 3 top prospects for Lee. It seems unlikely that Lee will be traded because of the demands, but one thing that teams are desperate for is pitching.

Jonathan Papelbon erupted after Sunday’s game saying he did not sign up for this. Well the Phillies agree and they have been patrolling the trade circuit to see who wants Papelbon. The Phillies again want the team to take control of the money that is due to Papelbon over the next 2 years.  The Tigers were interested for the services of Papelbon, but have went into another direction as they acquired Jose Veras yesterday from the Houston Astros.

The likely hood of Michael Young staying after tomorrow’s deadline seems highly unlikely. The Red Sox have been in constant contact with the Phillies about the services of Young. The Rangers have also had internal discussions in bringing back Young for a playoff push in 2013. Almost every team in the AL East want the services for Young.  A package deal with Young and Lee may happen but unlikely.

Carlos Ruiz is an intriguing option for teams, he is coming off a great year, but has been hampered by suspensions and injuries this year and is a shell of his former self. The Rangers are an option that would need the services of  Ruiz, as they need another catcher for a playoff push. Despite Ruiz’s offensive woes, he is still a great defensive catcher. He may also stay for next year because of the Phillies lack of a starting catcher.

Swept By The Cardinals, Lose 5 Straight, Now What?

Swept By The Cardinals, Lose 5 Straight, Now What?

Well that was fast, the Phillies have now matched their longest losing streak of the year with 5 in a row after getting swept by the St. Louis Cardinals last night losing 3 to 1. The loss drops the Phillies 4 game below .500. It was actually the best game since Friday that they played. With that, that is not saying much. The Phillies offense just couldn’t mustard enough offense. The Phillies managed only 7 hits and were 1 for 5 with RISP. The Phillies look lost at the plate and the field. The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 3rd inning and proved that is all they needed to win. The only Phillies run came on an Eric Kratz single to left scoring Laynce Nix who got the start in leftfield. After the RBI, the Phillies managed to get just 3 hits of Lance Lynn and the Cardinals bullpen. The Phillies need help and now they have to win 4 straight just to be .500 at the trading deadline which is approaching fast, July 31st. Kendrick after the game spoke about the team’s performance this year, “We’re in a rough patch right now,” he said. “We haven’t been consistent all year. We’ve looked good at times, but not consistent with everything. Hopefully we can start playing better. We have a short time to turn it around. I have faith in these guys. That’s for sure” (1). The Phillies do not get a break, they will travel to Detroit tonight and face the AL Central leading Tigers at Comerica Park. The Phillies swept the Tigers in there only series in Detroit, that was in 2002. Cole Hamels who is coming off a disappointing loss Saturday against the Mets, will face against Doug Fister. The series will make or break the Phillies this year, and probably determine their fate come the trading deadline. The game will start at 7:05pm and be featured on Comcast SportsNet and MLB Network.
