2 In A Row For Sandberg And The Phillies

Rockies Phillies Baseball

Whoa! The Phillies have won two games in a row, the first time since July 13th and 14th when they took two out of three against the Chicago White Sox. The Phillies won behind a good game by Ethan Martin. Martin helped the Phillies win 5 to 4 against the Colorado Rockies . The Phillies had a 5-0 lead in the game. The Phillies offense got on the board early with a 3 run homerun by John Mayberry, an RBI single by Cody Asche and a solo shot by Carlos Ruiz which proved to be the game winner. Ethan Martin pitched good enough to help the Phillies get the win. Martin’s line for the game: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB and 6 K’s. The bullpen, which has been atrocious all season, almost blew it yet again last night. The barber Luis Garcia, he was a barber last year in case you were wondering, gave up 2 runs in 0.1 inning. The game looked all but lost especially after Jake Diekman balked to allow the runners to advance to second and third. Diekman did manage to get out of that jam and did not allow any runs. Jonathan Papelbon came in and saved the game, it was his first save since July 11th against the Washington Nationals. The Phillies were 1 for 5 with RISP but like the Phillies of old, they won with the long ball. Ryne Sandberg spoke after the game about how the Phillies played as a team; “Put them in opportunities like tonight, and let them learn from that,” Phillies interim manager Ryne Sandberg said. “Hopefully, do well and be ready for it. Put them in those situations, and when they go in there and pitch like they did tonight, it’s a huge confidence boost for them” (1). The Phillies look to win 3 games in a row for the first time since July 7th,8th and 9th. Tyler Cloyd who was just recalled from Lehigh Valley will get the start tonight. Cloyd’s last start was against the Minnesota Twins on June12th where he gave up 1 ER in 5 IP. The Rockies will counter with Jorge De La Rosa. The game is at 7:05pm at Citizens Bank Park. The game will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.

Sandberg Earns First Win After Walk Off Win

What a crazy weekend for the Phillies, it starts with Charlie Manual getting fired, Ryne Sandberg becoming the new manager, the Phillies lose two to the Dodgers and are on the verge of getting swept and to top it off, a walk-off win on two errors by Hanley Ramirez to avoid the sweep. The Phillies won yesterday’s game 3 to 2 behind two 9th inning errors by Ramirez and helping the Phillies  avoid the sweep and helping Sandberg win his first game. The Phillies offense was lacking once again and were losing  2 to 1 in the 6th inning and were looking like the Phillies under Manual, no fire or no fight. The Phillies only run came on a Darin Ruf Homer to left field. Then in the bottom of the 6th, Cody Asche hits into a force-out but allows Chase Utley to score making the game tied at 2. Throughout the whole game Cole Hamels was pitching a great game and keeping the Phillies in the game. Hamels line for the game was: 7 IP, 2 ER, 8 K and 0 BB. Unfortunely like all other of Hamels  starts he did not  get the win. The ninth inning is where all the magic happened. Cody Asche strikes out, Casper Wells reaches on a throwing error on Ramirez,  Carlos Ruiz, who was 4 for 4 with 4 singles hits one to center letting Wells get to third. Jimmy Rollins pinch hits for Papelbon, he is intentionally walked for Michael Young who reaches on a fielding error by Ramirez, which allows Wells to score helping the Phillies avoid the sweep and help Ryne Sandberg win his first game as Phillies manager.  Ryne Sandberg after the game spoke about this wild game; “It’s about competing. It’s about improvement. It’s about good play,” Sandberg said. “And wins are certainly something we all shoot for. This is a game against a very good team — a hot team — that we’ll take for now and hopefully build from that” (1). The Phillies now welcome the Colorado Rockies to town, Ethan Martin will take t he mound and he will be opposed by Jeff Manship. The game is at 7:05pm at Citizens Bank Park, it will featured on Comcast SportsNet. It is Dollar Dog Night also!

Lannan Goes Down & So Do The Phillies

John Lannan's season likely came to an end on Wednesday night.

My entries are starting to become re-runs, every once in a while I get to write about a win, but not today. The Braves beat the Phillies last night 6 to 3 and to make matters worse,  John Lannan goes down with an injury to his knee, likely ending his season. The Phillies bats were playing catch up the entire game. After the 2nd inning, the Phillies were behind 5-0. Chris Johnson drove in 3 of those runs by himself, the Phillies had 3 runs total. Three bright spots in the game were Domonic Brown and Darin Ruf both hitting homeruns and the Phillies bullpen coming in and actually giving the Phillies a chance to comeback. The bullpen threw 7 innings of one run ball, that is very good compared to what the bullpen normally does. The Phillies as a team managed 8 hits and were 0 for 8 with RISP. After the game  John Lannan spoke about his injury; “It’s tough,” Lannan said. “I want to help this team out tremendously, go out there every five days. I know when I’m healthy I can go out there and do my job. I feel like I’m letting everybody down — letting myself down, my family down — but you have to look at the silver lining. Hopefully, I can get this thing fixed” (1). The Phillies have the night off, and comeback home for a 10 game home stand that begins with the RED HOT Los Angeles Dodgers, who have won 8 games in a row. Cliff Lee who is 1-3 with a 5.64  ERA  in his last 5 starts needs to get back to Cliff Lee type pitching. The Dodgers will counter with Zack Grienke who is 10 and 3 this year. The game will be at Citizens Bank Park and will start at 7:05pm on Channel 17 WPHL.

Braves Squeak Out A Win

Braves Squeak Out A Win

Coming off a stellar victory Monday against the NL East leading Braves, the Phillies and Ethan Martin could not pull out another victory Tuesday, as the Phillies lost 3 to 1. Martin did not pitch terrible, he struck out 6 Braves while giving up 3 runs, but the Phillies failed to capitalize on any opportunities to score. They were only 1 for 3 with RISP. The Phillies mustard out 6 hits against a very good Kris Medlen and an always tough Braves bullpen. The Braves got out to a 3-0 lead after Martin made a few mistakes, including giving up a double to Kris Medlen, which scored Tyler Pastornicky, making it 1-0. Then as Martin started to settle down, Chris Johnson hits a 2 run bomb to left making it 3-0 Braves. That is all Medlen and the Braves needed. The Phillies did get on the board in the Top of the 6th when Domonic Brown singled to center, scoring Chase Utley making it 3-1 Braves. The inning could of been bigger, but Brown was thrown out at 2nd after trying to stretch the single into a double. The Phillies just looked flat the whole game and like many games this season, they came up short. After the game Ethan Martin spoke about pitching in his home state of Georgia; “I thought I was going to be more amped up or [have more] butterflies,” Martin said. “It wasn’t that bad. I was kind of surprised” (1). The Phillies look to win the series when they play the rubber match tonight in Atlanta, John Lannan, who is coming off a terrible game against the Washington Nationals, where he gave up 8 runs in 5 innings. The Braves will counter with Brandon Beachy who received a no decision on August 3rd against the Phillies. The game will be featured on Comcast SportsNet at 7:10 at Turner Field.

No Trades & A Terrible Loss

No Trades & A Terrible Loss

Well the trading deadline has come and gone and for the first time in years, the Phillies made no trades. That is probably not the worse news, to top off an uneventful trading deadline, the Phillies lost to the San Francisco Giants 9 to 2. The Phillies looked awful and it didn’t help that Kyle Kendrick did his best Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels , Chad Qualls impersonation giving up 7 Runs, 6 earned over 2 innings. The only two highlights of the night was Cody Asche making his first MLB start at third base dove for a ball, that Michael Young probably would not of gotten, and it stopped from the Giants from scoring more runs. The talks of Chase  Utley getting an extension may have helped him drive in the Phillies only 2 runs and one was his 14th HR of the year.  The Giants out hit the Phillies last night 14 to 5. The Phillies coming off a great win Monday night, looked flat and came out stiff. After the game Kyle Kendrick spoke about his poor performance, “I have to make better pitches, that’s what it comes down to,” said Kendrick, whose ERA rose to 4.29. “They found some holes, and It was a frustrating night for me” (1). The Phillies continue their series with the Giants tonight, and celebrate the career of Brad Lidge who will retire tonight as a Phillie. All fans will receive a free Brad Lidge photo. Cole Hamels get the nod and looks to help the Phillies win their first series since the Chicago White Sox win on July 14th. Matt Cain gets the start for the Giants. The game starts at 7:05pm and the Brad Lidge festivities will start pregame.

Whoa A Win!

Whoa A Win!

Giants Phillies Baseball

The Phillies finally broke their 8 game losing streak by beating the San Francisco Giants 7 to 3 behind a great game by John Lannan and the offense. The long ball after all these months finally helped the Phillies. Michael Young and Carlos Ruiz went long giving the Phillies a comfortable lead and every Phillie starter except Kevin Frandsen got a hit. John Lannan pitched another great game, pitching 7 innings, 2 BB, 3 ER, and 3 K’s. Carlos  Ruiz finally hit his first home run of the season and it was a long one. After the game Young talked about finally breaking the streak, “Nice to get back and play in front of a home crowd — I don’t think they held that road trip against us,” said Michael Young, who hit a two-run homer in the victory. “They came out with some good energy; we fed off of that. There’s no way around the fact that we needed a win, so it was nice to get” (1). The Phillies look to continue their winning streak tonight when Kyle Kendrick takes the mound against Chris Gaudin. The game may look different depending on the outcome of the trading deadline that is at 4pm today. The game regardless will start at 7:05pm on Comcast SportsNet.
