Hamels Helps The Phillies Win!

Cole Hamels looked like Cole Hamels of last year, unfortunately it doesn’t matter, as the Phillies are not going anywhere. But despite that fact, Cole Hamels pitched a complete game and helped the Phillies break their road losing streak by beating the Atlanta Braves 5 to 1. The Phillies had previously lost their last 11 games on the road. The Phillies got a mix of great pitching and timely hitting from everyone. Jimmy Rollins started the scoring by hitting a single to center, scoring Hamels who got a triple to start off the inning. Then in the 5th inning Cody Asche, who has been hitting the ball very well since his call up, hit a 3 run home run to make it 4-0 Phils. Hamels was lights out the entire night, striking out 9 and only letting the Braves get 6 hits. This win was Charlie Manuel’s 1,000 managerial win. The Phillies got 8 hits and were 3 for 8 with RISP and that helped the Phillies win the game. After the game Charlie Manuel spoke about his 1,000th win; “It’s definitely quite an achievement,” Manuel said. “Like I told my players, they’re the ones that make it happen. They play. The two organizations I’ve been with, they’re the ones that get the players for me. That just goes to show you just how good they are. It’s hard for me to stand there and say I accept all of my accolades, because the other people are definitely achieving those for you. That’s kind of how I look at it. I’m sure later on it probably means a lot more to me than right now. We’re still trying to win some games and stuff” (1). The Phillies are still 12 games below .500 but maybe they can pick it up and help  gain some momentum going into next year. The Phillies continue their series with  the Braves tonight at Turner Field,  Ethan Martin will take the mound. Martin is coming off a strong start against the Chicago Cubs, where he won his first MLB game since his call up. The Braves will counter with Kris Melden. The game will be featured on Comcast SportsNet at 7:10pm.
