Cliff Lee finally throw a game that is worth mentioning, behind a great game by Cliff Lee, the Phillies beat the New York Mets 2 to 1. The Phillies did not hit the ball very well, but some timely hitting by Cody Asche helped Lee and the Phillies win. The New York Mets did take the lead in the second inning, when Andrew Brown hit a single to center that scored Marlon Byrd making it 1-0 Mets. The lead did not last long, third baseman Cody Asche hit a 2 run triple in the 4th inning scoring Michael Young and Darin Ruf making it 2 to 1 Phils. That is all the Phillies and Cliff Lee needed, Cliff Lee pitched 8 innings, gave up 5 hits and 1 run while walking 1 and striking out 7. It was Cliff Lee’s first win since July 5th, after the game Cliff Lee spoke with Comcast SportsNet Gregg Murphy about his performance stating that it was not his best pitch count game but he made adjustments to make what he was throwing work. Lee throw 121 pitches in 8 innings. Jonathan Papelbon earned his 22nd save of the year in he win. This win is the Phillies 7th in 11 games, and brings Ryne Sandberg’s record as Phillies manager to 7 and 4. The Phillies look for 3 in a row tomorrow night against the New York Mets at Citi Field. The Phillies send Kyle Kendrick to the mound, the Mets counter with Jon Niese. The game is at 7:05pm on Channel 17.

Hamels Helps The Phillies Win!

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels works in the first inning of a baseball game against the Atlanta Braves in Atlanta, Monday, Aug. 12, 2013. Photo: John Bazemore

Cole Hamels looked like Cole Hamels of last year, unfortunately it doesn’t matter, as the Phillies are not going anywhere. But despite that fact, Cole Hamels pitched a complete game and helped the Phillies break their road losing streak by beating the Atlanta Braves 5 to 1. The Phillies had previously lost their last 11 games on the road. The Phillies got a mix of great pitching and timely hitting from everyone. Jimmy Rollins started the scoring by hitting a single to center, scoring Hamels who got a triple to start off the inning. Then in the 5th inning Cody Asche, who has been hitting the ball very well since his call up, hit a 3 run home run to make it 4-0 Phils. Hamels was lights out the entire night, striking out 9 and only letting the Braves get 6 hits. This win was Charlie Manuel’s 1,000 managerial win. The Phillies got 8 hits and were 3 for 8 with RISP and that helped the Phillies win the game. After the game Charlie Manuel spoke about his 1,000th win; “It’s definitely quite an achievement,” Manuel said. “Like I told my players, they’re the ones that make it happen. They play. The two organizations I’ve been with, they’re the ones that get the players for me. That just goes to show you just how good they are. It’s hard for me to stand there and say I accept all of my accolades, because the other people are definitely achieving those for you. That’s kind of how I look at it. I’m sure later on it probably means a lot more to me than right now. We’re still trying to win some games and stuff” (1). The Phillies are still 12 games below .500 but maybe they can pick it up and help  gain some momentum going into next year. The Phillies continue their series with  the Braves tonight at Turner Field,  Ethan Martin will take the mound. Martin is coming off a strong start against the Chicago Cubs, where he won his first MLB game since his call up. The Braves will counter with Kris Melden. The game will be featured on Comcast SportsNet at 7:10pm.

Pettibone’s Debut=Phillies Win!

MLB: Pittsburgh Pirates at Philadelphia Phillies

John Lannan who went was but on the 15 day DL with a left leg strain may have someone competing against him when gets back. Every expert thought that Adam Morgan would be the one who would get the call up to take Lannan’s spot, but he was unavailable to pitch Monday, so it was 22 year old Jonathan Pettibone. The rookie pitched very well and looked like he is a pitcher of the future. Pettibone made his debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates and even though he did not get the win, he pitched very well. Pettibone struck out 6 Pirates over 5.1 innings and only gave 2 ER, they were both home runs. The Phillies only managed to score 3 runs and one again continued to leave men on base, but this game seemed like an old fashioned Phillies game, close but the Phillies held out to prevail in the end. The Pirates struck first when Pedro Alvarez unloaded on Pettibone changeup giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead. The Phillies would tie it in the bottom of the 3rd, when A.J. Burnett uncorked a wild pitch to help Pettibone, who drew a walk earlier in the inning. The Phillies would take the lead when Rollins gets hit by Burnett and scores Michael Young, who continued his hitting streak to 13 games. Russell Martin tied the game when he hit a Pettibone 4 seam fastball into the stands. The Phillies knew the kid was pitching great and wanted to make sure they wanted to win his first start! In the bottom of the 6th, Eric Kratz walks, and Ezequiel Carrera singled to second. Kratz moves to second base, Rollins hits a soft liner to right field helping Kratz score giving the Phillies the lead 3 to 2! The Phillies who blew many games in the 8th inning last year, but got the win this year because of Mike Adams and Papelbon who sealed the game! Raul Valdes got the win, but Pettibone deserves much credit for keeping the Phillies in the game. Pettibone after the game said “Nerves were definitely flying,” Pettibone said. “Leading up to the day, I was told yesterday afternoon. From that point on, there are mixed emotions going everywhere. Once I got on the mound, the first couples of innings the nerves were going a little bit, and then I kind of settled down and got into a nice little rhythm and went from there.” (1). The Phillies continue their 4 game series with the Pirates tonight with game number 2. Cole Hamelswill take the mound and look for his first win of the season, the Pirates will counter with Jeff Locke. The game is at 7:05pm at Citizens Bank Park and will be on The Comcast Network.
