Come On Out And SWEEP THE METS!

For a while there the Phillies were looking like they were going to repeat what happened last year and just fold to the rest of the NL and find ways to lose games after the series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but once again the New York Mets were here to save the day. The Phillies completed a sweep of the New York Mets yesterday behind a great start by Cole Hamels and finally earning his first win of the year! The Mets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first after a David RBI single, but the Hamels would settle down and become the pitcher the Phillies need him to be. The Phillies tie to game when Freddy Galvis, who was getting the start in left field, homered to left making it 1-1. Cole Hamels continued to deal; he did not give up a hit after David Wright’s RBI single in the first. Hamels pitched 6 innings, struck out 8 and his only bad stat of the game was he walked 6 Mets. In the top of the 7th the Phillies broke the game wide open, Mayberry and Galvis get two quick outs, but the Phillies who are never scared of pressure, get two straight singles from Laynce Nix and Jimmy Rollins. Ryan Howard, who had the day off, pinched hit for Kevin Frandsen, who got the start at first base, doubled to center, scoring both Nix and Rollins, making it 3-1 Phillies. Chase Utley, who did not want to be the odd man out, singled to center, giving plenty of time for Howard to score, making it 4-1 Phillies. In the 8th the Phillies get some more insurance runs, when John Mayberry doubled to left, scoring Domonic Brown, who singled to center in the previous bat. The Phillies won 5-1 after a 1-2-3 inning by Mike Adams in the 8th and a 1-2-3 inning by Jonathan Papelbon in the 9th, competing the sweep. The Phillies went on an offensive explosion in this series, scoring 18 runs total in 3 games. It also marked the return of Carlos Ruiz, who went 1 for 4 with a double. Charlie Manual after the game said “Chooch has become a good hitter over the last two years. He is a big player in our lineup. With Delmon Young [rehabbing a surgically repaired ankle in the Minors], that can give us a different look. We can throw more right-handed hitters at left-handed pitchers. (1). The Phillies have an off day and travel to Cleveland to play a two game series against the Indians, before heading back home later this week to play the Miami Marlins. Roy Halladay will get the start tomorrow against the Indian Zack McAllister. Halladay is coming off a great game against the Pirates, where he gave up 1 run and one hit, but received a no decision. Halladay is 6-2 with a 3.52 ERA in 13 games (12 starts) against the Indians, but he hasn’t faced them since 2009. (2). The game will be at 7:05pm at Progressive Field and will be seen on Comcast SportsNet.

Right when you think things could not get worse this season, the Phillies laid an egg against a Cincinnati Reds team who coming into the series against the Phillies had lost 5 straight games. While the word around the league: if you stink play the Phillies and get your confidence back! The Phillies played a game and an inning yesterday. The first game started at 5:30pm and was a continuation of the Tuesday night’s game that was suspended in the 9th due to heavy rain. Phillippe Aumont, who is actually pretty decent, was thrown into the bottom of the ninth of a tied ball game and forgot how to record an out. He gives up a single, walk and Ben Revere records an error in centerfield, loading the bases up for Jay Bruce who singles to right field and the game is over. The Phillies lose 1 to 0. That was just the beginning of the nightmare!
The Phillies played the third and final game against the Reds and I think the Phillies took a mental vacation in this game. The Reds jumped to a 11 -0 lead in the fifth inning, John Lannan who has been very good his last start just looked awful. The Reds lite Lannan up for 6 ER in 1.2 innings nad bumped his ERA to 6.14. Raul Valdes came in next and wanted to be just like John Lannan, by giving up 5 ER in 3.1 innings. Here is a shocker, Jeremy Horst came in and did not give up a hit or a run in 1 inning of work! The Phillies did get on the board in the 8th when Freddy Galvis hit a 2 run HR off Justin Freeman. Charlie Manual after the game said, “We got guys in our lineup that have been good hitters,” manager Charlie Manuel said. “We’ve got [Chase] Utley, we’ve got [Michael] Young, we’ve got Howard, we’ve got [Jimmy] Rollins. Really. Those guys have been good hitters. They still are. We’ve just got to do better. We’ve got to get better consistently, play the game better. That’s pitching, offense and defense. That’s the three phases of the game we have to do better at.” (1).The Phillies in the WHOLE series did not record a walk and scored a total of 4 runs. Something needs to give and the Phillies will not have time to ponder about this awful series, they come home tonight and start a 8 game homestand starting with the St. Louis Cardinals tonight at 7:05pm. Cole Hamels will take the mound against Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright. Hamels is coming off his best start of the season when he allowed 1 run over 6 innings against the Miami Marlins. Adam Wainwright is 2 and 1 this season with a 2.05 ERA. The game will be featured on The Comcast Network.
