It’s Just Getting Bad Now

It’s Just Getting Bad Now

Every time I write about the Phillies, it is getting more and more frustrating. Every story begins with the Phillies getting an early lead, and then their bats and pitching cannot keep the lead. Same thing happened yesterday afternoon; the Phillies jumped to a 3-1 lead and had nothing to show for it in the end. The Phillies scored 3 runs in 6 innings with 2 RBI’s coming from Domonic Brown’s bat and Ryan Howard’s and it looked like, whoa maybe the Phillies can hold the lead and tie the series against the Pirates. Cliff Lee who many thought should have been taken out of the 7th inning because of his pitch count, was left in the ballgame and proceeded to tie the game up. In the top of 8th Phillippe Aumont comes into the game because Mike Adams was not available, but Aumont did a great job, I mean a great job of giving up 3 runs and ruining a beautiful afternoon of baseball. By the end of the inning it was 6-3 Pirates. The Phillies did score a run in the 8th to cut it to 6-4 but the bats fell silent after that, in the ninth the Phillies got a leadoff double by Domonic Brown and the tying run comes to the plate but nothing happened: Ezequiel Carrera: Strikeout, Eric Kratz: Ground out, Freddy Galvis: Pop out. The Phillies lose 6 to 4 and and go 5 games under .500.  Cole Hamels, Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee were the starting pitchers and it’s the 18th time the three aces have pitched in a row for the Phillies. It’s the first time the club lost all three games. (1). After the game Charlie, who was ejected in the ninth, was at a loss for words: “I’ve been trying to do everything I possibly can. Everybody’s getting a chance to play,” Manuel said. “Believe me, we’re trying. But at the same time, we’re not getting it done. We definitely have to hit better. We have to score more runs. Our guys know that. We’re just in a period right now where we’re not playing good at all. We’re just not playing good baseball and we’re also having things not go our way. I always talk about the luck involved and everything that goes into play. And right now, we’re in kind of a bad turmoil, or whatever you want to call it.” (1). The Phillies look to get back to the win column when they travel to New York to take on the Mets, Kyle Kendrick will take the mound and the Mets will counter with Dillon Gee, who the Phillies rocked last week. The game is at Citi Field and will be at 7:10pm. The game will be on Channel 17 WPHL.

Rock Bottom Phillies

Right when you think things could not get worse this season, the Phillies laid an egg against a Cincinnati Reds team who coming into the series against the Phillies had lost 5 straight games. While the word around the league: if you stink play the Phillies and get your confidence back! The Phillies played a game and an inning yesterday. The first game started at 5:30pm and was a continuation of the Tuesday night’s game that was suspended in the 9th due to heavy rain. Phillippe Aumont, who is actually pretty decent, was thrown into the bottom of the ninth of a tied ball game and forgot how to record an out. He gives up a single, walk and Ben Revere records an error in centerfield, loading the bases up for Jay Bruce who singles to right field and the game is over. The Phillies lose 1 to 0. That was just the beginning of the nightmare!
The Phillies played the third and final game against the Reds and I think the Phillies took a mental vacation in this game. The Reds jumped to a 11 -0 lead in the fifth inning, John Lannan who has been very good his last start just looked awful. The Reds lite Lannan up for 6 ER in 1.2 innings nad bumped his ERA to 6.14. Raul Valdes came in next and wanted to be just like John Lannan, by giving up 5 ER in 3.1 innings. Here is a shocker, Jeremy Horst came in and did not give up a hit or a run in 1 inning of work! The Phillies did get on the board in the 8th when Freddy Galvis hit a 2 run HR off Justin Freeman. Charlie Manual after the game said, “We got guys in our lineup that have been good hitters,” manager Charlie Manuel said. “We’ve got [Chase] Utley, we’ve got [Michael] Young, we’ve got Howard, we’ve got [Jimmy] Rollins. Really. Those guys have been good hitters. They still are. We’ve just got to do better. We’ve got to get better consistently, play the game better. That’s pitching, offense and defense. That’s the three phases of the game we have to do better at.” (1).The Phillies in the WHOLE series did not record a walk and scored a total of 4 runs. Something needs to give and the Phillies will not have time to ponder about this awful series, they come home tonight and start a 8 game homestand starting with the St. Louis Cardinals tonight at 7:05pm. Cole Hamels will take the mound against Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright. Hamels is coming off his best start of the season when he allowed 1 run over 6 innings against the Miami Marlins. Adam Wainwright is 2 and 1 this season with a 2.05 ERA. The game will be featured on The Comcast Network.

Game Suspended Until 5:30pm Today

Even Mother Nature was tired of the Phillies poor offensive performance; due to her wrath, the Phillies and Reds game was suspended in the ninth inning due to heavy rain. The game at that moment was in its second rain delay, the game was delayed almost an hour and half in the beginning due to heavy rain. The game was a great one if you like pitcher’s duels. Kyle Kendrick and Homer Bailey did their best Tom Seaver and Steve Carlton impressions. The Phillies only managed two hits off Bailey, who is coming off a 7 run performance at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals. The opposite has happened now, the first few games: bad pitching=good offense, now great pitching=poor offense.  Kendrick numbers from last night: 2 H, 2 BB, and 4 K’s. Bailey was even more dominant he struck out 10 Phillies and only giving up two hits as well. The game will resume at 5:30pm, Phillippe Aumont is the pitcher and Zack Cozart is at the plate. The last time a Phillies game was suspended due to weather was Game 5 in the 2008 World Series. The second game will be shown after the first game completes, the start time is supposed to be at 7:10pm, John Lannan takes the mound, Mike Leake will oppose him. Both games will be on The Comcast Network, game 2 will be also seen on ESPN 2.

Yankees win, but Ruf gets his 1st HR!

We are counting the days until Opening Day, and we are one day closer! First the Phillies played the New York Yankees in a primetime game in Clearwater. The Phillies lost 6-2 but there were some bright spots in the meaningless game. Struggling Darin Ruf hit his first home run of the spring, when he connected on a solo shot off David Aardsma in the sixth inning. Cliff Lee started the game and lasted 2 and 2/3 innings. He gave up two earned runs but threw 71 pitches, 44 of which were strikes. Domonic Brown continued his strong spring with an RBI single up the middle and John Mayberry who continues to make a point to make the ball club, went 2 for 3 with 2 singles. Derek Jeter returned to his shortstop position for the first time since last year’s ALCS, he went 0 for 2. The Phillies continued their Grapefruit league today against the Pittsburgh Pirates; Aaron Cook gets the start, with Phillippe Aumont and Jake Diekman getting an inning to make their case for a spot in the bullpen.

Phillies News and Notes

People have forgotten that the World Baseball Classic is still going on and our old pal Jimmy Rollins helped the United States beat Puerto Rico 7-1 last night. Rollins had two hits and made some spectacular plays in the field to ensure the victory for Team USA. The United States now will play the dominant Dominican Republic team who last week lite up Cole Hamels in a tune up game in Spring Training.

After yesterday 7 run debacle, Roy Halladay said after the game that he is healthy and will be fine once the season starts. “The good part is, there’s no soreness,” Halladay said. “Nothing hurts (1).” Halladay, during the interview, blamed his poor performance on being lethargy. Do we believe him ? Manager Charlie Manual and pitching coach Rich Dubee expressed their concern after the game but also insisted Halladay is healthy. Hold onto your butts folks!

The lone bright spot in the strange and sudden deal in 2009 that sent Cliff Lee to the Seattle Mariners, Phillippe Aumont has emerged as a lock in for a bullpen spot for the 2013 Phillies. After spending the past few years in the minors learning control, Aumont has become the leader for the 3 bullpen spots the Phillies have opened. He has pitched two scoreless innings in Spring Training and looks to continue that streak Thursday where he should see an inning or two.
