Phillies Hit Rock Bottom Last Night

Phillies Hit Rock Bottom Last Night

Westbrook helps Cardinals beat Phillies 11-3

About a week ago, all of Philadelphia was thinking maybe these Phillies can actually make it to the playoffs? Well after losing two out of three to the New York Mets, and now on the verge of getting swept by the St. Louis Cardinals after losing last night 11 to 3, it look likes that won’t happen. The biggest problem the Phillies have had this year has been bullpen pitching. John Lannan did not exactly pitch the greatest game either. He pitched 4 innings, 4 ER, 8 H and 2 BB. But between Ramirez, Diekman and De Fratus, they gave up a combined 7 runs. The Cardinals struck first and did not look back, the got out to a 9 to 1 lead after 5 innings. The Phillies played a sloppy game but did not have an error, the Cardinals had an error. The Phillies looked like a little league team last night. They were making bad throws, bad plays in the field and not being patient at the plate. The Phillies were 2 for 10 with RISP and the Cardinals were 9 for 20.  The Phillies went a combined 9 for 34 at the plate, and just looked lost in St. Louis. The Phillies got their 3 runs by John Mayberry, Carlos Ruiz and Michael Martinez. How terrible is that? No RBI’s from Rollins, Utley, Ruf, Delmon Young and Michael Young. The Phillies need something to kick them in the butt. They can not go into the August and September with this roster. Charlie Manuel after last night’s game spoke about his team’s performance, “We’re standing there, and we’re trying just as hard as we can try,” Manuel said. “That’s just kind of how it went. We had trouble in the outfield, we had trouble all over the place, really” (1). The Phillies were having trouble with Jake Westbrook who is about as mediocre as you can get. The Phillies need to go back to the basics and find themselves. Despite the 4 straight losses, the Phillies are still in 2nd place in NL East and are 8 games behind the Braves, and 8.5 behind the Reds for the NL Wild Card. The Phillies look to salvage at least one game against the  Cardinals and look to Kyle Kendrick to save them. The Cardinals will counter with Lance Lynn who is 11 and 5. The game is at Busch Stadium and will be at 7:15pm. The game will be on Comcast SportsNet and MLB Network.

Mayberry Sends The Fans Home Happy In Extra Innings!

Mayberry Sends The Fans Home Happy In Extra Innings!

Last night’s game was a reason why we love baseball! The sheer suspense that really gets you on the edge of your seat and makes you a true Philadelphia sports fan. The Phillies, thanks to John  Mayberry Jr. beat the Miami Marlins 7 to 3 in 11 innings last night. Mayberry single handily made the Marlins look foolish. The fans really got into this game as they should, because the way this season has been, we needed a reason to cheer! Let’s start with the extra innings. The Marlins were up 3 to 2 in the bottom of the 10th and the Phillies were down to their last inning, Chad Qualls, who was terrible with the Phillies last year, came into the game for the Marlins. Qualls throw Mayberry all breaking stuff, slider, sinker etc. The 5th pitch of the at bat Mayberry lifted a 83 mph sinker into the left center seats tying the game up at 3, making it a whole new ball game! The next batter, Ben Revere gets on first, then Michael Young grounds to short, and umpire Bob Davidson said Revere interfered with the Marlins second baseman and called Revere and Young both out! Revere just slid in head first, which he didn’t have to do, but I have seen Chase Utley do more interference than Revere did last night. The fans went nuts! They proceeded to boo for the next 2 innings. This is where the fans got really into the game! It’s the bottom of the 11th and the game is still tied 3-3. The Marlins send in Edgar Olmos to pitch, who made his major league debut in Monday’s game. He gets Howard to fly out to right. Domonic Brown then reaches on a fielding error by Olmos. This is where the fun begins! The Phillies who have been out of bench players since the 9th, had to send up Kyle Kendrick to bat. He sacrifices over Brown, now there are two outs with Brown on second. Olmos chooses to intentionally walk Freddy Galvis, he then walks Kratz on 4 pitches and that quick the bases are loaded with two outs. Now steps up John Mayberry who is looking to be the first player in MLB history to tie a game with a home run in extras and then hit a walk-off grand slam. Olmos the whole inning had trouble throwing strikes, he throws 3 straight fastballs, but on the third one, Mayberry connected and sent the pitch over the flower bed in left field, sending the Phillies fans home happy and helped the Phillies win their third straight game 7 to 3! After the game Mayberry spoke about his game winning grand slam, “It feels pretty good, I can’t lie to you, that’s definitely a first. This is one of those days I’ll remember forever” (1).  The Phillies look for the sweep of the Marlins this afternoon when they send desperate for a win Cole Hamels to the mound, the Marlins will counter with Jacob Turner, who made his MLB debut  in his last starts against the New York Mets. The Phillies enter the game one game behind.500 and a half game behind the Washington Nationals for 2nd place. The magic of baseball is in the air, and it starts with Hamels. The game is a Citizens Bank Businessperson Special at 1:05pm and will featured on Comcast SportsNet.
