Report: Bastardo Hit With A 50 Game Suspension In The Biogenesis Scandal

Here is something that will make you say wow! According to csnphilly.com: Antonio Bastardo has been hit with a 50 game suspension in the Biogenesis Scandal in Baseball. This would be the third Phillie suspended due to using performance enhancing drugs. Carlos Ruiz was suspended earlier this year and Freddy Galvis was suspended 50 games last year. Bastardo’s suspension will last the rest of the year, the Phillies have exactly 50 games left this season. Bastardo, unlike Alex Rodriguez and Nelson Cruz will accept the suspension and start serving it immediately.

Domonic Brown Walks Off In Fashion

Domonic Brown Walks Off In Fashion

Domonic Brown

Last night’s game brought back the memories of the Phillies coming back and winning the ballgame, ah yes 2007, 2008 and 2009 and how they earned the nickname Fightin’ Phils. It was an important game for the Phillies, because this is make or break time for the team. If last night’s game is a sign of things to come then we should be in good shape. Everyone last night did a good job, including Ryan Howard who hit his first home run in three weeks. The man of the hour tho was Domonic Brown who’s RBI single in the ninth sealed the victory for the Phillies in walk-off fashion, helping the Phillies beat the Nationals 5 to 4. It also marked the return of John Lannan who was making his first start since April. The Phillies for the first time in a while received consistent offense from every starter. Let’s go to the ninth, where the fun began, Jonathan Papelbon comes into the game and is trying to save his 13th ballgame of the year. Papelbon got the first two batters he faced on fly outs, next steps in Chad Tracy, he hits a Papelbon Two-Seam fastball right over the right field fence, tying the game up at 4. It was Papelbon’s first blown save of the year. He then strikes out Roger Fernandina on 4 pitches. The Phillies now need a walk off to make this game perfect. The Nationals bring in Fernando Abad to replace Tyler Clippard, Ben Revere singles up the middle, here we go a good start, Michael Young then flies out, Jimmy Rollins also singles up the middle, Revere goes to third base, Stephen Lerud strikes out. The Phillies are now down to their last out! Next steps in Domonic Brown, who has recently cooled off at the plate after winning NL Player of the Month in May. Brown takes a Abad fastball and send it over the shortstops head and into center field scoring Ben Revere and winning the game for the Phillies 5 to4. Brown after the game spoke about the walk off at bat, “I don’t think they’re really pitching me different, if I’m going to chase pitches like I did in that second at-bat, then they’re going to keep coming with it, and I’ve got to make an adjustment” (1). The Phillies now move within 1 game of second place and look to continue their winning streak tonight when they send the ace of the staff 8 and 2 Cliff Lee to the mound. Cliff Lee is 5 and 3 lifetime against the Washington Nationals. The Nationals will send Ross Detwiler to counter Lee. The game is at 7:05 pm and will be seen on Channel 17 WPHL.

Another Wasted Outing By Hamels

Another Wasted Outing By Hamels

Every time Cole Hamels takes the mound, the Phillies bats take the day off and last night was no expectation. The Phillies lost to the Colorado Rockies 5 to 2 behind another quality start by Hamels. The Phillies did not score until the 9th inning but it was already too late. The Phillies had only 6 hits and Rockies starter Jhoulys Chacin only needed 86 pitches to get the win, Hamels threw 108, with 73 being strikes. The Phillies once again looked lost against another young, inexperienced pitcher. The Phillies batting averages are becoming very weak, with only Brown and Young batting over .275 (out of the regular starters). Hamels voiced his frustration during the game, after getting into an agruement with the home plate umpire and after the game Hamels spoke about the game and hear the sarcasm about his 10th loss, “It was a pretty fun game to watch from a pitching standpoint, it was a pitchers’ battle. Ultimately he came out on top, and here I am again” (1). This is Hamels 10th loss (NL Leader) and his third game in a row that he pitched very good, good to win at the game (1-1 in those games). Hamels once this season has only given up more that 7 hits and has pitched at least 6 innings in 8 of his starts. The Phillies now come home to take on the NL East rival Washington Nationals, John Lannan who has missed the last two months due to a leg injury, gets the start against his former team, Lannan before the going on the DL, has been pitching very well, he is 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA, his last start on April 17th he gave up 6 ER in1.2 innings. The Nationals will counter with Dan Haren, the game is at 7:05 and its Dollar Hotdog night at Citizens Bank Park. The game will be on Comcast SportsNet.

Sweet 16 For The Phillies!

Sweet 16 For The Phillies!

Phillies Twins Baseball

The Phillies finally broke that nasty 5 game losing streak last night after beating the Minnesota Twins 3 to 2 behind 16 hits by the Phillies and another quality start from Cliff Lee. The Phillies grabbed the early lead in the first inning after a Ryan Howard single to right scored Ben Revere, who looked very good last night leading the way with 4 hits. Cliff Lee looked like the 2009 Cliff Lee pitching 7 innings, striking out 6, only 2 ER, and 3 H. Lee did run into some trouble in the 7th when he gave up a walk to Joe Mauer, a single to Ryan Doumit, then finally a double to Justin Morneau, Ben Revere almost made a great diving catch but was late getting to it and it rolled to the wall. On the play Mauer and Doumit both scored giving the Twins a 2 to 1 lead. The Phillies who knew they could not get swept by the Minnesota Twins came back in the 8th on a Michael Young single and  Jimmy Rollins fielder’s choice, that helped the Phillies score the two runs they needed to take the lead  3 to 2. Manual pulls Lee for Mike Adams, who the other night blew the game actually looked like the Mike Adams of old, getting the Twins to go down in order. The line was paved for Jonathan Papelbon to come in and earn his 12th save of the year. Papelbon gets the Twins in order one, two, three in the 9th, sealing the victory for the Phillies. Of the Phillies 16 hits, only 2 were extra base hits, but hey we will take it. The Phillies now take their one game winning streak to Colorado to face the Rockies at Coor’s Field. Cliff Lee after the game spoke about wanting to turn the team around and start winning, “The past year and a half hasn’t gone the way I would have anticipated.  It’s why you play the games. You never know. I don’t think anyone here is happy with the way we’ve played in that time frame. It’s due to a lot of injuries. There are some good excuses, but they’re still excuses. We’re the Philadelphia Phillies. We should play better than we have” (1). The Phillies will send Kyle Kendrick to the mound this evening in Denver, the Rockies will counter with Juan Nicasio. The game starts at 8:40pm and will be featured on Channel 17 WPHL and 1210 WPHT and 94.1 WIP.

.500 Baseball and 2nd Place? We’ll Take It!

.500 Baseball and 2nd Place? We’ll Take It!

Man yesterday was a day Phillies fans have been waiting for, for a while! The Phillies after 8,000 chances are at .500 baseball after sweeping the Miami Marlins 6 to 1 behind a great game by Cole Hamels, who earned his [sigh] 2nd win of the year. The Phillies were looking a little dry the whole game until the bottom of the 7th when the Phillies went on a scoring spree. It all started with a injury to the home plate umpire that changed the luck of the Phillies. Freddy Galvis starts off by striking out, next up Delmon Young singles to center, Ben Revere then singles on a soft fly ball that dropped in to right field, Michael Young then moves the runners up on a sac fly to right field, Jimmy Rollins then singles to center, scoring Cesar Hernandez who pinch ran for Young, making it 2 to1 Phillies. Ryan Howard, out of the blue gets a triple that scores both Rollins and Revere making it 4 to 1 Phillies. That is the first triple for Howard since 2011. Then the man on the month, day, year whatever you want to call him, Domonic Brown homers to left field making it 6 to 1 Phillies. It was his 18th home run of the year, leading all NL batters. All of Brown’s home runs this year have been to the pull side, right field. This is all the scoring the Phillies needed, they win  6 to 1 and pull ahead of the Washington Nationals for 2nd place and are at .500 baseball for the first time since early April. Charlie Manual after the game spoke about them finally reaching .500 baseball and possible going over .500, “We’ll be over .500 tomorrow night if we play good, when you get to .500, if we can win some games, like four or five straight, or eight out of 10, we’ll be in a good position” (1).  The Phillies look to continue their winning streak tonight when they play the Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee. Tyler Cloyd looks to get over a rough start he had against Milwaukee on June 1st.  The Brewers will counter with Wily Peralta who beat the Phillies on June 1st. The game will be at Miller Park and start at 8:10pm. The game will be seen on Channel 17 WPHL.
