Phillies Win It In 13 Innings!

Yesterday’s game was a great game if you are a baseball fan. The Phillies looking to salvage a season that has gone wrong, last night the Phillies pulled it together in 13 innings to win 7 to 5 after the Padres committed two errors in the inning. Cole Hamels who started the game, looked awful, giving up 5 runs and letting the Padres get a 5 to 3 lead until Delmon Young hit a two run bomb to left to tie the game in the 8th inning. The Phillies gave Hamels a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning, but he could not hold the lead, letting the Padres score 5 unanswered runs and was pulled after 5 to 2. The Phillies mounted their comeback with 1 run in the 7th and the Delmon Young two run shot to tie it. Let’s go the thirtieth inning, the game is tied 5 to 5. Tommy Layne comes in to replace Huston Street. He hits Chase Utley to start the inning, he then get two quick outs. Domonic Brown walks, then Ben Revere reaches on a fielding error by Logan Forsythe that scores Utley, then he throws the ball away and lets Brown score making it 7 to 5 Phillies. Shaky Papelbon comes in but does not repeat Monday’s loss, he gets his 15th save of the year. After the game Charlie Manual spoke about the outcome, “That’s why you keep playing, you’d be surprised at what you can do when you really want to play. That’s what it’s all about. Sometimes it doesn’t matter … if you want to play, that can take you a long way. It might not take you to the Promised Land, but you can have a lot more fun if you’re winning games” (1). The Phillies now move on to play the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Phillies will send Jonathan Pettibone to the mound to try and help the Phillies win three in a row. The Dodgers will counter with Zack Grienke who is 3 and 1 since coming back from the DL in May. The game is at 10:10pm at Dodger Stadium. The game will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.

Papelbon Blows It Yet Again

Papelbon Blows It Yet Again

Well right when you thought the Phillies could not do any worse, they go ahead and blow a game against a team that is very subpar. The Phillies including Jonathan Papelbon and Justin DeFratus blew the game last night, helping the San Diego Padres come back from 3 to 0 to win 4 to 3 in 10 innings. Cliff Lee started the game and pitched another great game, his only trouble was in the 9th inning when he gave up 2 straight hits to start the inning. The Phillies built a 3-0 lead after RBI’s by Ruiz, Rollins and Utley. Chase made it 3-0 after hitting his first home run since coming off the DL. Lee came back out in the ninth, he proceeds to give up a double to Chase Headley and a single to Carlos Quentin. Manual then pulls Lee for Papelbon, who has blown 3 saves in less than a week, blew another game, he threw one pitch and it was a base hit, scoring both Quentin and Headley, making it 3 to 2 Phils. Papelbon gets the next two batters out, he is one out away from ending the game, Kyle Blanks, Papelbon threw a curve in the dirt, I got passed Carlos Ruiz and helped score the tying run. In the 10th, Blanks comes up again and hits a Justin DeFratus pitch past Michael Young to score the winning run, the Phillies lose 4 to 3.  After the game Ruiz spoke about the passed ball, “I don’t have anything to say,” he said. “I expected to catch the ball. I missed it” (1). Manual answered after the game about sending Lee to the plate in the eight instead of pinch hitting for him, Ryan Howard was available to hit but Manual did not put Howard in. “I wanted to send him back out there,” Manuel said. “If two guys had gotten on base I definitely would have hit for him. We got two outs and a three-run lead, I figure I’d let him go” (1). The Phillies will look to Kyle Kendrick to help the losing streak end, the Padres will counter with Jason Marquis. The game will be at 10:10pm at Petco Park and will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.
