Matt Harvey Shuts Down Phillies

Matt Harvey Shuts Down Phillies

Cliff Lee

Before the All-Star Break we all thought the Phillies were going to get on a roll and get back atop the NL East, but after yesterday’s loss, it may be a big up-hill climb. The Phillies had their best pitcher on the mound against the Mets best pitcher Matt Harvey, game went to Harvey. The Phillies managed 4 hits and 10 strikeouts against Harvey, meanwhile Lee gave up 3 Home Run’s, 5 runs and 7 hits. The Phillies looked terrible and could not figure out Harvey all day. The Phillies went a combined 4 for 31 and only had 3 runners in scoring position all day. And as  All of the home run’s hit by the Mets came on two outs. I wish I had more things to say but this game was atrocious and the Phillies just looked pathetic against a bad NL team, the Phillies should of won the series. After the game, Lee spoke about his performance, “I’ve got to find a way to make better pitches in those situations. They’re all with two strikes, and they’re all with two outs. That’s the part that’s frustrating for me. But what’s done is done. You’ve got to give Harvey a lot of credit today” (1). It was Lee’s second straight loss and looks to be struggling a bit with the location of his pitches. The Phillies have the night off, but face the NL best St. Louis Cardinals in St. Louis. Jonathan Pettibone will take the mound, the Cardinals will counter with Shelby Miller. The game starts at 8:15pm at Busch Stadium and will be featured on Channel 17 WPHL.

Frandsen and Kendrick Deliver In Series Victory!

Frandsen and Kendrick Deliver In Series Victory!

The Phillies last night were going for their 3rd straight series victory against teams that are ahead of the Phillies either in the wild card or the NL East. The Phillies backed by Kyle Kendrick came out on top against the Nationals with a 3 to 1 win and sealed up another series victory for the Phillies. The Phillies did just enough to win the game and against an All Star pitcher in Jordan Zimmermann who was 12 and 3 going into last night’s game. The Phillies still won despite 4 errors (3 by Chase Utley and 1 by Michael Young). The Phillies struck first in the 5th inning when Ben Revere singled to left field, scoring Carlos Ruiz from second, who singled to start the inning. The next inning the Nationals came right back with a Ryan Zimmermann sac fly scoring Bryce Harper, who tripled previously.  The game was tied, and it looked like we were going to go to extra innings, but pinch hitter Kevin Frandsen came to bat in the bottom of the 7th and doubled to right field, scoring John McDonald who pinch ran for Darin Ruf who started the inning with a double. The Phillies have now taken the lead, then in the 8th Michael Young hit a fielder’s choice to score Utley making it 3 to 1 Phillies. In the ninth, Papelbon came in and sat the Nationals in order 1-2-3. It was Papelbon’s 20th save of the year and it got the Phillies one game closer to .500 and also second place. After the game Frandsen spoke about the Phillies trying to get this season on track, “I just think we’re starting to click, we’re starting to get some breaks to go our way,” Frandsen said. “First couple of months of the year, it was tough — I think everybody saw that. It wasn’t like we were playing bad baseball, but we were getting bad breaks. I think we’re getting fortunate breaks right now, and hey, we’ll take them whenever we can” (1).  The Phillies now start a new series against the AL Central Chicago White Sox’s. Jonathan Pettibone will take the mound and he will face John Danks. The game will feature the famous Xfinity Fireworks after the game. The game starts at 7:05pm and will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.

Phillies Win It In 13 Innings!

Phillies Win It In 13 Innings!

Yesterday’s game was a great game if you are a baseball fan. The Phillies looking to salvage a season that has gone wrong, last night the Phillies pulled it together in 13 innings to win 7 to 5 after the Padres committed two errors in the inning. Cole Hamels who started the game, looked awful, giving up 5 runs and letting the Padres get a 5 to 3 lead until Delmon Young hit a two run bomb to left to tie the game in the 8th inning. The Phillies gave Hamels a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning, but he could not hold the lead, letting the Padres score 5 unanswered runs and was pulled after 5 to 2. The Phillies mounted their comeback with 1 run in the 7th and the Delmon Young two run shot to tie it. Let’s go the thirtieth inning, the game is tied 5 to 5. Tommy Layne comes in to replace Huston Street. He hits Chase Utley to start the inning, he then get two quick outs. Domonic Brown walks, then Ben Revere reaches on a fielding error by Logan Forsythe that scores Utley, then he throws the ball away and lets Brown score making it 7 to 5 Phillies. Shaky Papelbon comes in but does not repeat Monday’s loss, he gets his 15th save of the year. After the game Charlie Manual spoke about the outcome, “That’s why you keep playing, you’d be surprised at what you can do when you really want to play. That’s what it’s all about. Sometimes it doesn’t matter … if you want to play, that can take you a long way. It might not take you to the Promised Land, but you can have a lot more fun if you’re winning games” (1). The Phillies now move on to play the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Phillies will send Jonathan Pettibone to the mound to try and help the Phillies win three in a row. The Dodgers will counter with Zack Grienke who is 3 and 1 since coming back from the DL in May. The game is at 10:10pm at Dodger Stadium. The game will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.

Kendrick and Brown Seal The Win

Kendrick and Brown Seal The Win

Last night was a game that you sat back and thought ok we got this, and the Phillies did not disappoint!  The game was sealed after the hot hitting Domonic Brown continued his home run streak and Kyle Kendrick doing his best Cliff Lee impersonation. The Phillies won over the Marlins 7 to 2 after a Kendrick complete game. Domonic Brown has finally become the real deal and has become the NL leader in home runs after hitting his 17th last night. Everyone except Jimmy Rollins had a hit in the lineup, including Kendrick. Kendrick stats for the night were 9 IP, 6 H, 1 BB, and 2 ER. Kendrick after the game said about his performance, “It was fun, obviously, the hit was awesome. My dad was here, so I’m sure he enjoyed it. [Erik Kratz] called a good game, I was pounding the strike zone early and I was able to keep my pitch count down. It was a fun night, that’s for sure” (1). Domonic Brown has now become the talk of town after all these years and before the game he was named NL Player of the [May] Month. Brown after the game on his stellar season so far, “I’m not really big on numbers, I kind of go off my at-bats. I go and watch my at-bats every day and see which ones are good and eliminate the bad ones and just keep improving at not giving at-bats away. That’s really the main objective — not giving any at-bats away” (1). The Phillies got RBI’s from Kratz and Delmon Young, who hit a HR after Brown hit his 17th. Cesar Hernandez got his first MLB RBI last night and Revere and Kendrick help get the 7 runs to beat the Marlins. The Phillies look to win three in a row when they will send Jonathan Pettibone to the mound, he is coming off a rough start against the Red Sox on May 30th. The Marlins will counter with Ricky Nolasco who is 0 and 1 against the Phillies this season. It is Carlos Ruiz Bobble head night tonight at the ballpark, it is free to all fans! The game starts at 7:05pm and will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.

Allergic To .500 Baseball Yet Again

Allergic To .500 Baseball Yet Again

Once again the Phillies fail to reach the .500 level and try to turn this so far very disappointing season around. The Phillies were tagged for 9 runs last night and had a 4-0 lead to come back from after the first inning. The closest they got was 4 to 2 when Delmon Young hit a 2 run home run in the bottom of the first. Jonathan Pettibone was tagged for the 4 runs in the first and never really recovered from the deficit. It was his first loss this season, but second straight no decent outing This was the third chance in eight days to get to .500 but failed to do so. Jacoby Ellsbury stole 5 bases yesterday, a Red Sox’s record, and made the Phillies pitching look like little leaguers. The Phillies only got 6 hits,  3 Red Sox’s: Ellsbury, Saltalamacchia and Iglesias combined for 7 hits, go figure. Charlie Manual after the game talked about his terrible offense, “We talk about the same thing every night.  That’s where that .245 batting average comes into play. This is a game of percentages, averages, that’s what happens. We didn’t muster enough offense” (1). Every Phillies pitcher last night with the exception of Michael Stutes gave up at least 2 runs. Besides Young’s home run, the other bright spot was the second base debut of Cesar Hernandez, who went 2 for 4 with a run scored. He was called the other day to replace Michael Young who has been placed on the bereavement list. The Phillies end the interleague series with the Red Sox and welcome the NL Central Milwaukee Brewers to town. Cole Hamels looks for is first win since April tonight, the Brewers will counter with Yovani Gallardo, who is 3-5 with a 4.74 ERA. The Phillies hope to score Hamels some runs, in his starts this year they have scored a TOTAL of 13 runs. The game is at Citizens Bank Park at 7:05pm and will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.
