Backup Centerfielder?

The Phillies are desperate to find a centerfielder since Ben Revere injured his foot a few weeks ago. The search may end soon, according to Fox Sports reporter Ken  Rosenthal, the Phillies may sign recently designated for assignment Chris Dickerson. He would solve their backup centerfielder problem. I guess they think John Mayberry can play center, but after last night’s game I do not think he can play. Dickerson last played for the Baltimore Orioles and played in 46 games and batted .245. He is 31 years old and has played for the Reds, Yankees, Brewers and Orioles. He is a career .263 hitter with 16 homeruns.

Phillies Brewers Baseball

Well right when you thought, hey the Phillies are over .500  and won 5 straight games maybe we can get this season started, well that was a premature thought after losing 3 straight to the not so good Milwaukee Brewers. The Phillies lost yesterday 9 to 1 behind a dismal game by Jonathan Pettibone and the bullpen. The Phillies were in the hole 4 to 0 by the second inning and never had a chance to come back. They mustard out 5 hits and one run on a solo homerun by Humberto Quintero in the eighth. Our old pal from 2007 Kyle Lohse, who was 1 and 6 entering into the game,  pitched 8 strong innings giving up 4 hits and 1 ER. Rollins, Brown, Nix, Frandsen, and went a combines 0 for 17 with 0 walks.  Michael Young who has had a rejuvenation since batting leadoff, talked about the 3 straight losses,  “The sky is not falling.” We had a little rough stretch here. We definitely didn’t play our best baseball, without a doubt. We have to make a quick adjustment here on this road trip. If we’re going to get where we want to be, and be right in the middle of this thing in the stretch drive, we’re going to have to find a way to make adjustments during the game, not after the games. That’s what good teams do. A lot of the guys in this room have been there and done that. We have to make more in-game adjustments, not after the game, when the guys have a chance to talk about it” (1). The Phillies have tonight off before starting a series against the AL Central Minnesota Twins in Minnesota. The Phillies will send Cole Hamels to the mound, he is coming off a strong start where he earned his 2nd win of the season against the Miami Marlins. The Twins will counter with  P.J. Walters who is 2 and 1 with a 3.00 ERA. The game will be at Target Field. The game will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.

Over. 500 & Loving Every Minute!

Over. 500 & Loving Every Minute!

The Phillies have won 5 games in a row, but more importantly, they are 1 game over the .500 mark for the first time this season! Tyler Cloyd pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings while giving up 4 hits. The Phillies now solely own 2nd place and are 31-30. The Phillies managed 10 hits and for the first time since 200, Michael Young batted lead off and had a great night, he went 3 for 5. The Phillies got RBI’s from Delmon Young, Ryan Howard, John Mayberry, and Eric Kratz. Delmon Young hit his 6th home run of the season in the 5th inning. Domonic Brown continued his hot hitting, going 2 for 3 with a walk. The Phillies look like a whole new team that is on a mission, a mission to recapture the magic of the last few years and make one last run to the World Series. Michael Young spoke after the game about batting leadoff and the winning streak, “We’re happy that the hard work is starting to pay off and we’re starting to see it in the standings.  We’re very happy with our style of play right now. We want to keep doing that and keep pushing the envelope” (1). Charlie Manual also spoke about the way the team is playing, “We’re starting to work counts better, and we’re picking up some walks.  Tonight, I felt we got a good start out of the gate” (1). The Phillies look to continue their winning streak tonight when they send Cliff Lee to the mound in search of his 7th win of the year. Lee beat the Milwaukee Brewers in his last start 6/2/13, when he struck out 11, scattered 7 hits and gave up 3 ER. The Brewers will counter with Alfredo Figaro, who pitched 3.2 scoreless innings against the Phillies on June 2nd. The game will be on at 8:10pm and be at Miller Park. The game will be seen on Comcast SportsNet.

.500 Baseball and 2nd Place? We’ll Take It!

.500 Baseball and 2nd Place? We’ll Take It!

Man yesterday was a day Phillies fans have been waiting for, for a while! The Phillies after 8,000 chances are at .500 baseball after sweeping the Miami Marlins 6 to 1 behind a great game by Cole Hamels, who earned his [sigh] 2nd win of the year. The Phillies were looking a little dry the whole game until the bottom of the 7th when the Phillies went on a scoring spree. It all started with a injury to the home plate umpire that changed the luck of the Phillies. Freddy Galvis starts off by striking out, next up Delmon Young singles to center, Ben Revere then singles on a soft fly ball that dropped in to right field, Michael Young then moves the runners up on a sac fly to right field, Jimmy Rollins then singles to center, scoring Cesar Hernandez who pinch ran for Young, making it 2 to1 Phillies. Ryan Howard, out of the blue gets a triple that scores both Rollins and Revere making it 4 to 1 Phillies. That is the first triple for Howard since 2011. Then the man on the month, day, year whatever you want to call him, Domonic Brown homers to left field making it 6 to 1 Phillies. It was his 18th home run of the year, leading all NL batters. All of Brown’s home runs this year have been to the pull side, right field. This is all the scoring the Phillies needed, they win  6 to 1 and pull ahead of the Washington Nationals for 2nd place and are at .500 baseball for the first time since early April. Charlie Manual after the game spoke about them finally reaching .500 baseball and possible going over .500, “We’ll be over .500 tomorrow night if we play good, when you get to .500, if we can win some games, like four or five straight, or eight out of 10, we’ll be in a good position” (1).  The Phillies look to continue their winning streak tonight when they play the Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee. Tyler Cloyd looks to get over a rough start he had against Milwaukee on June 1st.  The Brewers will counter with Wily Peralta who beat the Phillies on June 1st. The game will be at Miller Park and start at 8:10pm. The game will be seen on Channel 17 WPHL.

Well the Phillies bullpen almost blew that game but managed to save it in the end. Cliff Lee, who by far is the best Phillies pitcher this season, shut down the Brewers for 7.2 innings. The Phillies offense looked very much like 2008 and 2009 than the 2013 offense. The Phillies won 7 to 5 but the game seemed closer than 2 runs. The Phillies scored 7 runs on some great timely hitting by Domonic Brown, who was a double shy of the cycle drove in 4 of the 7 runs and is on fire and looks to be the player we thought he would be 3 years ago. The Phillies also got RBI’s by Eric Kratz, Freddy Galvis, and Jimmy Rollins. The Phillies had a 7-0 lead after the 7th inning. Lee pitched the beginning of the 8th, but showed signs of fatigue and let a few base runners on. Charlie Manual pulled Cliff Lee after 7.2 innings and 105 pitches. Lee stats for the game were 0 BB, 11 K 3 ER and 7 H. After Lee left the fun began. Justin DeFratus was brought into the game, he precedes to give up a triple to Jonathan Lucroy spoiling Lee’s great game, only 1 run was earned to DeFratus, the rest were to Lee. The inning ends, it is now 7 to 4 Phillies. Jonathan Papelbon was not available to close because of an illness, so Antonio Bastardo got the call for the 9th. he proceeds to give up a single to Alex Gonzalez an a walk to Rickie Weeks. Then Jeff Bianchi singles to left field scoring Gonzalez. Bastardo gets Jean Segura to ground out to first base, Ryan Howard had a chance to make it a double play but as afraid of the ball going into left field, so choose the easy out. Bastardo then intentionally walks Carlos Gomez, loading the bases up with 2 outs. Martin Maldonado pinch hits for the Burke Badenhop and luckily Maldonado pops up to Ben Revere, sealing the victory for Cliff Lee and the Phillies. Lee moves to 7 and 2 on the season. Cliff Lee said after game about wanting to stay in, “I wanted to stay in there and keep pitching, but at the same time I knew I wanted to be smart and use my head a little bit. It is what it is. It was frustrating, no doubt about it. I’d rather be in control of the game” (1). The Phillies now to look to gain some ground on the Nationals and Braves when they look to beat up on the Marlins, who are coming off a sweep of the Mets. Kyle Kendrick will take the mound and the Marlins will counter with Tom Koehler. The game is at Citizens Bank Park and will be at 7:05pm on Comcast SportsNet.
