Allergic To .500 Baseball Yet Again

Once again the Phillies fail to reach the .500 level and try to turn this so far very disappointing season around. The Phillies were tagged for 9 runs last night and had a 4-0 lead to come back from after the first inning. The closest they got was 4 to 2 when Delmon Young hit a 2 run home run in the bottom of the first. Jonathan Pettibone was tagged for the 4 runs in the first and never really recovered from the deficit. It was his first loss this season, but second straight no decent outing This was the third chance in eight days to get to .500 but failed to do so. Jacoby Ellsbury stole 5 bases yesterday, a Red Sox’s record, and made the Phillies pitching look like little leaguers. The Phillies only got 6 hits,  3 Red Sox’s: Ellsbury, Saltalamacchia and Iglesias combined for 7 hits, go figure. Charlie Manual after the game talked about his terrible offense, “We talk about the same thing every night.  That’s where that .245 batting average comes into play. This is a game of percentages, averages, that’s what happens. We didn’t muster enough offense” (1). Every Phillies pitcher last night with the exception of Michael Stutes gave up at least 2 runs. Besides Young’s home run, the other bright spot was the second base debut of Cesar Hernandez, who went 2 for 4 with a run scored. He was called the other day to replace Michael Young who has been placed on the bereavement list. The Phillies end the interleague series with the Red Sox and welcome the NL Central Milwaukee Brewers to town. Cole Hamels looks for is first win since April tonight, the Brewers will counter with Yovani Gallardo, who is 3-5 with a 4.74 ERA. The Phillies hope to score Hamels some runs, in his starts this year they have scored a TOTAL of 13 runs. The game is at Citizens Bank Park at 7:05pm and will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.
