Whoa A Win!

Whoa A Win!

Giants Phillies Baseball

The Phillies finally broke their 8 game losing streak by beating the San Francisco Giants 7 to 3 behind a great game by John Lannan and the offense. The long ball after all these months finally helped the Phillies. Michael Young and Carlos Ruiz went long giving the Phillies a comfortable lead and every Phillie starter except Kevin Frandsen got a hit. John Lannan pitched another great game, pitching 7 innings, 2 BB, 3 ER, and 3 K’s. Carlos  Ruiz finally hit his first home run of the season and it was a long one. After the game Young talked about finally breaking the streak, “Nice to get back and play in front of a home crowd — I don’t think they held that road trip against us,” said Michael Young, who hit a two-run homer in the victory. “They came out with some good energy; we fed off of that. There’s no way around the fact that we needed a win, so it was nice to get” (1). The Phillies look to continue their winning streak tonight when Kyle Kendrick takes the mound against Chris Gaudin. The game may look different depending on the outcome of the trading deadline that is at 4pm today. The game regardless will start at 7:05pm on Comcast SportsNet.

Close But No Cigar

The Phillies were going for the sweep against the San Francisco Giants and were so close but in the end, the Giants prevailed 4 to 3 behind a Andres Torres line drive to center that scored Buster Posey. Jonathan Pettibone got the start and once again gave the Phillies another quality start going 5 innings giving up 3 runs and giving up 7 hits, not great stats but he kept the Phillies in the game. Barry Zito on the other hand was dominant, pitching 7 innings and giving up 1 run. The Phillies scored their runs off a Kevin Frandsen home run, who was getting the start at first base over Ryan Howard, a single by Chase Utley and a sac fly by Delmon Young in the Top of the 9th making it 3-3. The game went into extra innings and the Phillies were one out away from going into the 11th when Andres Torres took a Antonio Bastardo fast ball to right field, ending the game and helping the Giants avoid the sweep. Bastardo was tagged for the loss. The Phillies made the series interesting and hopefully helped the Phillies get back on track. The Phillies now head to Arizona to face the Diamondbacks for a 4 game series. Cole Hamels will take the mound tonight against Patrick Corbin who is 4 and 0 and an ERA of 1.80. The game is at 9:40pm in Arizona’s Chase Field and will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.

The New Ace Wins Again!

Kendrick is Arbitration Eligible in 2014 and a Free Agent in 2015. he could reel in 13 - 15 Wins during this year for the club. He is great insurance for 2014 should Halladay not make his Vesting Option and leave the franchise. Or if they end up trading Cliff Lee. At $4.5 Million this year, he helps out the club for payroll value!

Coming into the season how many people thought that with Hamels, Lee and Halladay in the rotation that Kyle Kendrick would be the best pitcher on the staff? Well he is and he proved it again last night beating the San Francisco Giants 6 to 2. Kendrick pitched 7 strong innings while only giving up 2 runs and no walks. The Phillies continued their offensive explosion with 12 hits with getting quality hits from Howard, Young, Utley and Rollins. Howard and Utley both hit home runs to help Kendrick win his 4th game of the season. 2 time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum was tagged for 5 runs and earned his 2nd loss of the season. After the game Charlie Manuel praised Kendrick’s performance, “No, I can’t say enough about it,” said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, when asked about Kendrick’s season. “But if I want to go to sleep tonight I better quit, I guess. Because we have to come back out here early in the morning. Hell, I’ll be out here at 7:30. No, he’s been super. He’s done really good.” (1). Everyone in the Phillies lineup, except Domonic Brown, had at least one hit. Rollins, Utley, Young, Howard combined for 7 of the 12 hits and knocked in at 6 runs the Phillies scored.  The Phillies will look for the sweep this afternoon when they send young sensation Jonathan Pettibone to the mound who is coming off a win over the Miami Marlins where he pitched 6 innings and only 1 run. The Giants will counter with Barry Zito who is 3 and 1 with a 3.06 ERA. The game is on at 3:45pm and at AT&T Park and will be on Comcast SportsNet.

Cliff Lee Throws A Gem in San Francisco!

Cliff Lee Throws A Gem in San Francisco!

Phillies Cliff Lee dominates Giants once again

After coming off a terrible two games against the Marlins, and losing one of your top tier pitchers to injury, the Phillies needed a victory behind their other top tier pitcher Cliff Lee and he delivered. Lee and the Phils beat the reigning World Series Champs last night 6 to 2 with Lee throwing 8 strong innings with 6 K’s and only giving up 2 Earned Runs. The player of the game, besides Lee, is Michael Young who went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s. Domonic Brown also hit a sole shot off Madison Bumgarner, who was entering the game with a 3 and 0 record and 1.55 ERA, got the loss. Cliff Lee after game spoke the early slow start by the Phillies, “That’s more of what we are right there, no doubt, we definitely haven’t been playing up to our potential. We’ve been really far short of that, to be honest with you. I think tonight’s more of a real depiction of what we are. Yeah, I expect us to pick it up a little bit. We’ve kind of underperformed this first month, and it’s time for us to turn it on.” (1). The Phillies in the third inning managed to score more runs (3) than they did in the last two games, which was two. Our old friend Hunter Pence, making his first game playing his former team since the trade last July, went 3 for 3 with an RBI.  Everyone in the Phillies lineup got a hit expect Delmon Young and Jimmy Rollins who went a combined 0 for 6. Cliff Lee has never lost to the Giants his career, he is 5 and 0 lifetime against him. The Phillies look to make it two in a row tonight in San Francisco when they send the ace of the staff Kyle Kendrick to the mound. Kendrick is coming off a win against the Miami Marlins where he pitched 7 innings and only giving up 2 runs. The Giants will counter with Tim Lincecum who is 2 and 1 with a 4.41 ERA. The game is at 10:10pm and will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.

Another Rough Game By Halladay/Phillies

The reason Roy Halladay has won 201 major league games and a Cy Young in both the National and American leagues is because of his mentality to take the ball when it is his turn and fight through adversity to the bitter end. (Michael Perez/AP)

Well another day and another game the Phillies get smoked in. Roy Halladay took the mound for the game, but probably a fan could of pitched better with a beer in his hand instead of a glove. The Phillies lose 14-2 and after the game Halladay revealed he has shoulder discomfort ever since the Pirates game, that was 2 weeks ago and has pitched in the last two games and gave up a combined 17 runs.  “It started the morning after I pitched against Pittsburgh, I woke up and didn’t really think anything of it. It was just kind of regular soreness. This kind of progressed over the last two weeks or so. It’s right shoulder discomfort.” (1). Ruben Amaro after the game said this about Halladay’s condition: “We’re likely to have to put Doc on the DL, up until now he hasn’t really expressed any discomfort. He hasn’t been on our injury report. But now it sounds like we’ll have to DL him. Until we do some diagnostic work, we won’t know exactly what’s going on with him, but clearly, it doesn’t seem like he’s very healthy. It was pretty apparent with his performance, unfortunately.” (1). The Phillies tied the series with the Marlins but have looked anemic on offense, scoring 2 runs in the last two games. The Phillies scored 2 runs yesterday but on only 4 hits. Adeiny Hechavarria was the player of the game, hitting a grand slam and a triple to drive in 7 runs for the Marlins. The Phillies scored their two runs on a wild pitch and  Freddy Galvis fielders choice. Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Delmon Young, Carlos Ruiz and Domonic Brown went a combines 0 for 14 with 5 strikeouts. The Phillies appear to be in trouble and only time can tell if they can bounce back, May is quickly upon us and the Phillies now go on a 7 game West Coast swing starting with the San Francisco Giants tonight. Cliff Lee takes the mound for the Phillies and is coming off a rough game after the Indians last week, will try to help the Phillies get back on the winning side, the Giants will counter with Madison Bumgarner. Bumgarner is 3 and 0 with a 1.55 ERA this season. The game will be at 10:10pm at AT&T Park and will be shown on Comcast SportsNet.

Weekend Moves for the Phillies

Image The season opener is almost upon us and sometimes you have to let a few go. The Phillies made some minor moves, sending Tommy Joseph, Cody Asche, Pitchers Adam Morgan, J.C. Ramirez, and Kyle Simon, and utliityman Michael Martinez were optioned to minor-league camp (1). The biggest surprise was Joseph after he posted stellar numbers in Spring Training and taking charge of a pitching staff that has a combined 38 years in the Major Leagues. Joseph was 6 for 13 (.462) with a homer and two doubles in Spring Training (1).  He was the youngest player in camp for the Phillies, 21 years of age. Joseph has plenty of years ahead of him and probably/should be your starting catcher next year. Carlos Ruiz is a free agent at the end of the year. Joseph was acquired in the trade from the San Francisco Giants for Hunter Pence.
