Whoa A Win!

Whoa A Win!

Giants Phillies Baseball

The Phillies finally broke their 8 game losing streak by beating the San Francisco Giants 7 to 3 behind a great game by John Lannan and the offense. The long ball after all these months finally helped the Phillies. Michael Young and Carlos Ruiz went long giving the Phillies a comfortable lead and every Phillie starter except Kevin Frandsen got a hit. John Lannan pitched another great game, pitching 7 innings, 2 BB, 3 ER, and 3 K’s. Carlos  Ruiz finally hit his first home run of the season and it was a long one. After the game Young talked about finally breaking the streak, “Nice to get back and play in front of a home crowd — I don’t think they held that road trip against us,” said Michael Young, who hit a two-run homer in the victory. “They came out with some good energy; we fed off of that. There’s no way around the fact that we needed a win, so it was nice to get” (1). The Phillies look to continue their winning streak tonight when Kyle Kendrick takes the mound against Chris Gaudin. The game may look different depending on the outcome of the trading deadline that is at 4pm today. The game regardless will start at 7:05pm on Comcast SportsNet.

Cody Asche has been called up from Triple-A meaning that Michael Young will likely be traded tonight or tomorrow. Cody Asche is hitting .295 at triple A with an .837 OPS. He has 15 home runs. He belted  two in the IronPigs’ 9-1 victory Monday. He has a 10-game hitting streak (1).

Michael Young has been involved in trade rumors before and has a full no trade clause and apparently has only approved a trade  to Ranger, so stay tuned.

Trade Rumors 7/30

The trading deadline is upon us and the Phillies in the last 9 games have become sellers. The news out of Phillies camp is that everyone on the roster is available except for three players: Cole Hamels,  Domonic Brown and Chase Utley. That means that Lee, Papelbon, Rollins are all available. According to mlbtraderumors.com, the Red Sox are kicking the tires on Cliff Lee and the Phillies are asking for the Red Sox to assume control of all of Lee’s contract ($70 million left until 2015 with an option for 2016) and the Phillies want in return, the team’s 1, 2, and 3 top prospects for Lee. It seems unlikely that Lee will be traded because of the demands, but one thing that teams are desperate for is pitching.

Jonathan Papelbon erupted after Sunday’s game saying he did not sign up for this. Well the Phillies agree and they have been patrolling the trade circuit to see who wants Papelbon. The Phillies again want the team to take control of the money that is due to Papelbon over the next 2 years.  The Tigers were interested for the services of Papelbon, but have went into another direction as they acquired Jose Veras yesterday from the Houston Astros.

The likely hood of Michael Young staying after tomorrow’s deadline seems highly unlikely. The Red Sox have been in constant contact with the Phillies about the services of Young. The Rangers have also had internal discussions in bringing back Young for a playoff push in 2013. Almost every team in the AL East want the services for Young.  A package deal with Young and Lee may happen but unlikely.

Carlos Ruiz is an intriguing option for teams, he is coming off a great year, but has been hampered by suspensions and injuries this year and is a shell of his former self. The Rangers are an option that would need the services of  Ruiz, as they need another catcher for a playoff push. Despite Ruiz’s offensive woes, he is still a great defensive catcher. He may also stay for next year because of the Phillies lack of a starting catcher.

Strong Interest In Michael Young

It’s the Trade Rumors that make this time of year in baseball the most interesting, at least until September when the Pennant races heat up. The rumors have become something Michael Young has to deal with and according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports said that there are about 12 teams that have checked in on the services of Young. The Red Sox and Yankees seem to be the front runners, if Ruben Amaro wants to trade his third baseman. Young is having a good season so far, he is batting .288 this year and has played the majority of the games (89) and has stayed healthy for the most part. The next two weeks will definitely heat up and stay tuned for any updates!

Old Cole Hamels Shows Up And Beats Washington!

Old Cole Hamels Shows Up And Beats Washington!

The Phillies are starting to come together, and maybe the ace that we always wanted is finally starting to comeback. I am talking about Cole Hamels, who has a very rough season, but has pitched his two best games in his last two starts and they are against very good teams: The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Washington Nationals. Hamels held the Nationals at bay and helped the Phillies win 4 to 2 and earn his 4th win of the year. The Nationals did score first, after Hamels left an 84 mph changeup in the zone and old our pal Jayson Werth hit it over the centerfield wall, making it 1-0 Nationals. It would be the last lead the Nationals would have the whole game. The Phillies tied the game in the  bottom of the 4th after Utley doubled and Domonic Brown singled to right field and allowing Utley to score from second. The Phillies busted the game wide open in the bottom of the 6th when Revere and Rollins both single and Utley reaches base on a throwing error by Adam LaRoche giving the Phillies a 2 to 1 lead. Michael Young, who has been in the middle of a million trade rumors, doubled to center, helping Rollins and Utley score giving the Phillies a 4 to 1 lead. Hamels was cruising the entire game until the bottom of the 8th when he loaded the bases with only one out, but managed to get out of the jam with no runs. The bottom of the ninth was tricky, Jonathan Papelbon was unavailable to pitch, so Charlie Manuel put in Antonio Bastardo to close the game. He got into a little trouble and allowed the Nationals to score a run making it 4 to 2 Phillies, and John Mayberry, who was put into the game as a defensive sub for Delmon Young, made two awful plays in left allowing the Nationals to keep the game alive. But Bastardo got Scott Hairston to pop out, giving the Phillies the win. After the game, Cole Hamels spoke about his performance, “I think that was something we haven’t seen all year,” Hamels said of the energetic crowd of 33,502. “That was the most exciting eighth inning I’ve had in a long time, especially with it not being a sellout. It felt like there were 60,000 fans, so that was awesome to see that from the fans on every pitch. Definitely brought the energy level back” (1). The Phillies look for their 4th win in a row, when Cliff Lee will look for his 11th win of the year, which would make him tied for 2nd in the NL with St. Louis Lance Lynn. The Nationals will counter with Gio Gonzalez, he game will be at 7:05pm at Citizens Bank Park, the game will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.
