Walk Off Win & .500? You Got That Straight!

Walk Off Win & .500? You Got That Straight!

Phillies center fielder John Mayberry celebrates getting the game winning walk-off RBI single with teammates during the 10th inning against the White Sox at Citizens Bank Park.

The All-Star break has come upon us and the Phillies have entered with a 7-3 home stand. The Phillies played 34 innings of baseball in two days and deserve a break, but the way they did it was amazing. The Phillies won yesterday against the Chicago White Sox 4 to 3 in 10 innings, but they should of won  in 9 innings. Cole Hamels got the start on that hot July afternoon and pitched like the Cole Hamels of last year. This is 4th straight quality start and I can say that Cole Hamels is back. The Phillies struck first in the bottom of the first with a Domonic Brown RBI double scoring both Utley and Rollins making it 2-0 Phils. Then in the bottom of the forth, Cole Hamels got his first of two hits on the day when he singled to right scoring Delmon Young to make it 3-0. The White Sox’s finally get to Hamels in the 7th when journeymen Jeff Keppinger singled to short helping to score Adam Dunn making it 3-1 Phils. Then as a surprise, Hamels came back in the 8th inning, probably because the bullpen has been overworked. Hamels proceeds to give up a home run to Alejandro De Aza making it 3-2 Phils. Hamels gets out of the 8th with only the one run. The 9th comes and Papelbon looked to close the game and send the Phillies into the All-Star break with a .500 record and a half game behind the Nationals for second place. Papelbon with two outs blows the game when catcher Josh Phegley singles to center scoring Blake Tekotte making it 3-3. Another extra inning game for both teams. But this game would not last as long as the others. In the tenth inning, Utley doubles, Rollins is intentionally walked and Brown moves up the runners to give the Phillies  chance. The White Sox’s then intentionally walk Darin Ruf. The bases are loaded and all you need is a sac fly to win!  Delmon Young strikes out, but John Mayberry, who had a walk off Grand Slam earlier in the year, looked to do it again. It would be the first time in Phillies history since the 20’s. Mayberry does it less dramatically, he singles up the middle scoring Utley giving the Phillies a 4-3 win and sends them in the break with a 48 and 48 record .5 behind the Nationals and 6.5 behind the Braves. The Phillies next game will be Friday night when they play the New York Mets.

Frandsen and Kendrick Deliver In Series Victory!

Frandsen and Kendrick Deliver In Series Victory!

The Phillies last night were going for their 3rd straight series victory against teams that are ahead of the Phillies either in the wild card or the NL East. The Phillies backed by Kyle Kendrick came out on top against the Nationals with a 3 to 1 win and sealed up another series victory for the Phillies. The Phillies did just enough to win the game and against an All Star pitcher in Jordan Zimmermann who was 12 and 3 going into last night’s game. The Phillies still won despite 4 errors (3 by Chase Utley and 1 by Michael Young). The Phillies struck first in the 5th inning when Ben Revere singled to left field, scoring Carlos Ruiz from second, who singled to start the inning. The next inning the Nationals came right back with a Ryan Zimmermann sac fly scoring Bryce Harper, who tripled previously.  The game was tied, and it looked like we were going to go to extra innings, but pinch hitter Kevin Frandsen came to bat in the bottom of the 7th and doubled to right field, scoring John McDonald who pinch ran for Darin Ruf who started the inning with a double. The Phillies have now taken the lead, then in the 8th Michael Young hit a fielder’s choice to score Utley making it 3 to 1 Phillies. In the ninth, Papelbon came in and sat the Nationals in order 1-2-3. It was Papelbon’s 20th save of the year and it got the Phillies one game closer to .500 and also second place. After the game Frandsen spoke about the Phillies trying to get this season on track, “I just think we’re starting to click, we’re starting to get some breaks to go our way,” Frandsen said. “First couple of months of the year, it was tough — I think everybody saw that. It wasn’t like we were playing bad baseball, but we were getting bad breaks. I think we’re getting fortunate breaks right now, and hey, we’ll take them whenever we can” (1).  The Phillies now start a new series against the AL Central Chicago White Sox’s. Jonathan Pettibone will take the mound and he will face John Danks. The game will feature the famous Xfinity Fireworks after the game. The game starts at 7:05pm and will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.
