Frandsen and Kendrick Deliver In Series Victory!

Frandsen and Kendrick Deliver In Series Victory!

The Phillies last night were going for their 3rd straight series victory against teams that are ahead of the Phillies either in the wild card or the NL East. The Phillies backed by Kyle Kendrick came out on top against the Nationals with a 3 to 1 win and sealed up another series victory for the Phillies. The Phillies did just enough to win the game and against an All Star pitcher in Jordan Zimmermann who was 12 and 3 going into last night’s game. The Phillies still won despite 4 errors (3 by Chase Utley and 1 by Michael Young). The Phillies struck first in the 5th inning when Ben Revere singled to left field, scoring Carlos Ruiz from second, who singled to start the inning. The next inning the Nationals came right back with a Ryan Zimmermann sac fly scoring Bryce Harper, who tripled previously.  The game was tied, and it looked like we were going to go to extra innings, but pinch hitter Kevin Frandsen came to bat in the bottom of the 7th and doubled to right field, scoring John McDonald who pinch ran for Darin Ruf who started the inning with a double. The Phillies have now taken the lead, then in the 8th Michael Young hit a fielder’s choice to score Utley making it 3 to 1 Phillies. In the ninth, Papelbon came in and sat the Nationals in order 1-2-3. It was Papelbon’s 20th save of the year and it got the Phillies one game closer to .500 and also second place. After the game Frandsen spoke about the Phillies trying to get this season on track, “I just think we’re starting to click, we’re starting to get some breaks to go our way,” Frandsen said. “First couple of months of the year, it was tough — I think everybody saw that. It wasn’t like we were playing bad baseball, but we were getting bad breaks. I think we’re getting fortunate breaks right now, and hey, we’ll take them whenever we can” (1).  The Phillies now start a new series against the AL Central Chicago White Sox’s. Jonathan Pettibone will take the mound and he will face John Danks. The game will feature the famous Xfinity Fireworks after the game. The game starts at 7:05pm and will be featured on Comcast SportsNet.

Papelbon Blew It Again

Jonathan Papelbon has been so good this season, the other night against the Nationals he had a hiccup, but the Phillies were able to win the game anyway, but last night not so much. The Phillies had a 2 to 1 lead going into the 9th and were looking to sweep the Washington Nationals to gain sole possession of second place in the NL East. It didn’t help that the Phillies did not get another hit after Michael Young’s 2 run home run in the first until the 10th inning. Papelbon had two outs in the ninth but our old pal Jayson Werth who has been a killer in this series drove in the tying run on a base hit to left. I believe Papelbon, who was pitching his 3rd game in 3 nights had some fatigue but we will never know. The Phillies looked terrible at the plate all night, managing only 4 hits, 2 in the first inning. The extra innings were terrible also, Michael Stutes came into the game in the 11th, after Mike Adams pitched a good 10th inning, proceeds to give up a grand slam to Ian Desmond, before Desmond pitching coach Rich Dubee, who has known Desmond since he was  little kid, told Stutes probably something stupid and then bam a grand slam. That put the Phillies down 6 to 2, and that was the final. After the game Papelbon called out his teammates, “Fundamentals, fundamentals, this is a game of fundamentals, and we’ve got to do the fundamentals right, and keep grinding. It’s a game of who grinds the most and who plays the best fundamental baseball. That’s pretty much it. “I’m talking about everything. Everything from the pitchers making the correct pitches, pitchers backing up the correct bases, outfield is moving on counts, infield is moving on counts, every little thing that goes into every pre-pitch. We’ve got to do better. It’s not pointing one finger at anybody. It’s a team. It’s a team effort here. It’s 162 games of grinding baseball” (1). The Phillies are off tonight and start a three game series against the New York Mets tomorrow at 7:05pm at Citizens Bank Park. Cole Hamels will take the mound, the Mets will counter with Jeremy Hefner.

Lee Helps The Phillies Get Back Into 2nd Place!

Lee Helps The Phillies Get Back Into 2nd Place!

The Phillies are back in 2nd place in the NL East after beating the Washington Nationals 4 to 2. Cliff Lee who is by far the best Phillies pitcher this season pitched another great game and helped him earn his 9th win of the season which is tied for third most in the majors. The Phillies offense did just enough at the right time to get the job done. The Nationals struck first after a (insert boo’s) home run by former Phillie Jayson Werth making it 1-0 Nationals. The Phillies came right in the bottom of the forth when Ryan Howard hit a sac fly to right letting Michael Young score easily, Young doubled to center to start the inning, it tied the game at 1. The Phillies did not stop there, in the bottom of the sixth Young belted another double to right, letting Revere waltz home to make it 2 to 1. Kevin Frandsen who got another start at second singled a frozen rope to left scoring both Young and Rollins making it 4 to 1 Phillies. That is all Lee needed to get the job done. Lee did give up a home run to Jeff Kobernus on a mistake cutter that did not cut. It was his first homerun of his career, that made it 4 to 2 Phillies. Jonathan Papelbon was brought into to relieve Lee in the bottom of the 9th, Papelbon did not made the same mistake as he did Monday night, he got the Nationals to go down with only a single, sealing the victory for the Phillies and help them gain back 2nd place and also gain a game and a half on the Braves, who lost two games to the New York Mets last night.  Cliff Lee spoke about his performance and his comments about the team needing to win, “I was telling the truth about how I felt, I’ll continue to do that. I try to be honest and say how I feel. I don’t really care about how it’s interpreted, to be honest with you. I want to win. I signed here to win. I think that was misconstrued into thinking I want to play somewhere else, and that’s not the case. I want to win, and I want to win here. That’s it” (1). The Phillies will look to sweep the Nationals tonight when they send Kyle Kendrick to the mound, the Nationals will counter with former Phillies Gio Gonzalez, who is coming off a no decision against the Cleveland Indians, he pitched a career high 127 pitches in the game, so some fatigue may come into play, lets hope! The game is at 7:05pm and will be seen on Comcast SportsNet.

Delmon Young Starts To Play

If you are like me and are tired of seeing John Mayberry and Laynce Nix patrolling the outfield, then this is some good news for you. Delmon Young, who has been out recovering from ankle surgery, played in his second extended spring training game, he played a few innings in right field.  Ruben Amaro was in Florida watching Young’s progress, “He’s still got a little bit of a gimp, but he’s running a little bit smoother. Just looking at some of the film, he’s moving better.” (1). Young will definitely be out the whole month of April, and when he comes off the DL, he will receive a $225,000 bonus. Young has not played right field since 2007, but how bad can he be? In Phillies history, the outfield has given us the slowest athletes ever: Pat Burrell, Greg Luzinski, Pete Incaviglia, and need I say more? Delmon Young has potential, he was the ALCS MVP last year for the Detroit Tigers, and hopefully once healthy he can return to his old form and help the Phillies get a little pop from the right field position, something they have not had since Jayson Werth.  Young’s career stats: .284 AVG, 482 RBI’s, 955 H, and 89 HR in a 7 year span. Last year he batted .267 with 74 RBI’s and 18 HR in 151 games for the Tigers.
