Phillies and Utley Working On Multi-Year Extension

It looks like you will get a few extra years out of that Chase Utley Jersey, according to mlbtraderumors.com, the Phillies are working on an extension for Chase Utley that would include two years at $13 million a year with a vesting option for the 3rd year. That would mean the contract would equal to 2 year for 26 million depending on how much the option will be for. Despite being out for a month with an oblique injury, Utley stands to play 125 games this year, the most he would play since 2009. Utley is putting up good numbers this year .277 with 13 HR’s and 36 RBI’s. The Phillies look to Utley as their franchise player, and if he retires as a Phillie, he would be one of the few players to play for one team his entire career.

Trade Rumors 7/30

The trading deadline is upon us and the Phillies in the last 9 games have become sellers. The news out of Phillies camp is that everyone on the roster is available except for three players: Cole Hamels,  Domonic Brown and Chase Utley. That means that Lee, Papelbon, Rollins are all available. According to mlbtraderumors.com, the Red Sox are kicking the tires on Cliff Lee and the Phillies are asking for the Red Sox to assume control of all of Lee’s contract ($70 million left until 2015 with an option for 2016) and the Phillies want in return, the team’s 1, 2, and 3 top prospects for Lee. It seems unlikely that Lee will be traded because of the demands, but one thing that teams are desperate for is pitching.

Jonathan Papelbon erupted after Sunday’s game saying he did not sign up for this. Well the Phillies agree and they have been patrolling the trade circuit to see who wants Papelbon. The Phillies again want the team to take control of the money that is due to Papelbon over the next 2 years.  The Tigers were interested for the services of Papelbon, but have went into another direction as they acquired Jose Veras yesterday from the Houston Astros.

The likely hood of Michael Young staying after tomorrow’s deadline seems highly unlikely. The Red Sox have been in constant contact with the Phillies about the services of Young. The Rangers have also had internal discussions in bringing back Young for a playoff push in 2013. Almost every team in the AL East want the services for Young.  A package deal with Young and Lee may happen but unlikely.

Carlos Ruiz is an intriguing option for teams, he is coming off a great year, but has been hampered by suspensions and injuries this year and is a shell of his former self. The Rangers are an option that would need the services of  Ruiz, as they need another catcher for a playoff push. Despite Ruiz’s offensive woes, he is still a great defensive catcher. He may also stay for next year because of the Phillies lack of a starting catcher.

Phillies To Listen To Offers On Cliff Lee

According to mlbtraderumors.com, the Phillies and Ruben Amaro will listen to offers for Cliff Lee. Ruben has said multiple times that he doe not intend to trade Cliff Lee, but as a GM he has to listen to any offer a team may offer despite his intentions to not trade Lee. Cliff was supposed to start today but has been scratched due to a stiff neck, so rumblings around the league is that, are the Phillies skipping his start so they can trade him when he is healthy? The Phillies have lost 6 in a row and are 9.5 games behind the Braves and are in third place in NL East. The Phillies playoff chances are getting slimmer by the day and no one knows what Amaro and the Phillies are going to do.

Phillies Inquire About Luke Gregerson

According to mlbtraderumors.com, the Phillies have inquired about the services of relief pitcher Luke Gregerson and an outfielder, but apparently the Padres want a significant package of young prospects, but the Phillies are looking for trades that would not require them to trade their most MLB ready prospects. The Phillies according to some leagues officials, the are trying to salvage the 2013 season but help their future. Stay tuned!

Extension For Utley Coming?

All the trade rumors that have involved Chase Utley may have gone to the waste side. According to csnphilly.com the whispers around the league have stated that the Phillies are not listening to offers for Utley and have been really quiet on anything about Utley. During Sunday’s game against the Mets, Ruben Amaro was quoted,“If we’re fortunate enough to keep Chase in our uniform, which we hope to do” (1). Also Amaro and Utley have been spotted during practice talking to one another, no one knows what they are discussing but it maybe about a new deal with Utley. Chase Utley is 34 years old and has been the face of this Phillies roster since 2005. Only time will tell if Utley will stay or go!

Strong Interest In Michael Young

It’s the Trade Rumors that make this time of year in baseball the most interesting, at least until September when the Pennant races heat up. The rumors have become something Michael Young has to deal with and according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports said that there are about 12 teams that have checked in on the services of Young. The Red Sox and Yankees seem to be the front runners, if Ruben Amaro wants to trade his third baseman. Young is having a good season so far, he is batting .288 this year and has played the majority of the games (89) and has stayed healthy for the most part. The next two weeks will definitely heat up and stay tuned for any updates!
